Nippy No. Fun to drive yes, My mate has the 1.6 version and i'll be honest they are really well equipped, all your usual neccesities. They are also really comfortable inside. They handle quite well, oribably 3 out of 5 stars for handling, fuel consumption will see you roughly 28mpg which is quite poor. You would be much better off getting the 1.7cdti version, they are faster, more fuel efficient, and certainly more fun to drive. A cheeky zorst and a map would see massive amounts of torque aswell. Up to you though buddy :y:

1.6 is slowww as they come! there more of a grown up type car, very soft suspension like a boat around corners as the weigh a tonne!

Do you mean looks or driving?

Both. Its a big car for a 1.6 to lug about so wont be terribly frugal, as the other guy said diesel is the better choice

That will be shit. The interior is horrible in them and it will be a slow and crap drive.

Enjoy :y:

if you must have an astra then get the 1.9 CDTi 150, and remap it. Enormous torque and still over 43mpg. Mate's got a mapped one and it's a brilliant alrounder, my old Civic Type R struggled to keep up plus he would nearly double my mpg.

You could probably pick up an SRi CDTi 150 for that kind of money.

Wouldn't pay that for it, I got a newer Sri sports hatch version with the same mileage for 5350. With the 1.8

id rather walk to be honest
the back seats are so uncomfortable on a long journey. the dash is so tall and square it looks like an office desk. 1.6 is horribly slow. looks and handles like a barge. way overpriced for the car your getting. Carries the name 'astra', so its already about as boring as watching paint dry/ owning a mondeo / watching grass grow etc.

The 5 door's suspension are soft as shit and doesn't handle well. I've got the sporthatch 1.8 version and the suspension is much harder on them and nippier than my old VTR

Enjoy the fuel cost!!

for a 1.6 they drink fuel! cars too big for a small engine.

Atleast go for the 1.9 diesel.. SRi.. 150bhp.. they're fun.

A guy at work has a 1.6 Mk5 Astra.

He is quite conscious about fuel prices etc and is the type of person who budgets every month and what not.Uses the car basically for him and his GF going back and forward to work and doing the weekly shopping etc, so mostly town driving.

Hasn't once complained about it being heavy on the fuel.Saying that he probably dosn't go over 3k rpm.But even so, if you are going to be ragging it it won't be good, but if your going to be driving like a granny, im sure it wont be a proper gas guzzler.

A mate even has a 1.4 SXi twinport and he hasn't complained about it being gutsy.

dunno

can think of better cars for that kinda money which would just be as comfy and alot more fun to drive!

I drive them day in, day out at work and they're majorly disappointing if you're looking for something exciting

However they are a good all rounder and do take a good thrashing with little complaint or breakdowns
