Checking an axle for play?

Failed the mot on a n/s bearings gone on the axle, anyway ive got the old one off and sourced a new one but whats the best way to test these for play off the car as i cant feel play in the one ive took off even with a bar. Its defiantly gone because it had worn the inside of the tyre. I just want to get a feel for it then i dont pick up another damaged one :y: thanks

Probably going to be hard to check it off the car but sounds like you've done what you could, as long as you havn't paid too much just fit it and see. I had mine re-built with im-axle for £360.
