As said, I'd go for a cheap defender.

However we have a £50 Lada Niva for off roading and it's bloody amazing. Slow on the road but it'll easily pull Land rover's out of ditches if they're stuck, we moved a lorry in the snow last year and it just keeps going no matter how many times we try to kill it.

For the price, we're happy. It's just a bit ugly.

youd be lucky to even get a crap defender for that money

As said you'd not get much for your money with a Defender and you'd always be stuck at the side of the road!!! I'd choose either Pajero/Shogun/Delica, Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol. Stick with Jap and you'll get a reliable 4x4 for that money, spend it on a Land Rover and you'll be spending more and more just keeping it running.

As said a Defender for that money would be a bit ropey, So if you've had Jap in the past get a Shogun :y:

EDIT: ^ agree with cheap Discovery :D

How do people rate Isuzu Troopers or Daihatsu Fourtraks, out of curiosity?

Shogun's are Pajero's just renamed for European market. IIRC Pajero means wanker in spanish or something like that.
Automatic Pajero's, Shogun's Delica's all use the same Super Select 4x4 Gearing with Low range and Diff-Lock. Although the rear diff on a shogun's and pajero's have a more heavy duty rear diff, the same as is on the long wheel base Delica, and a locker can be fitted to these aswell, some also come with rear locker fitted, just depends on how it was ordered or if someone has modified it already.

Both are reliable and capable, the Fourtraks are great fun, with a nice set of MT's on they will quite often put fully modified Defenders to shame.

If you look at Disco's be extra carefull to check everywhere for rust especially round the boot area. My mate's Disco has just had a whole new boot floor fitted as it had rotted to bits however the rest of it is immaculate.

SJ's are great offroad with a good set of MT's and with a few mods look much better.

That's how to transform a Ka, although the only part of the Ka was the body, the chasis, gearbox, suspension and engine were from other 4x4's inlucing an SJ IIRC.

Edited to add...
Although rust problems on this must be worse than any Land Rover.

price of defenders have shot up by a silly amount due to the last two bad winters, most of them are rotten and folk are only selling them due to the amount of welding needing done on them

You could get a 300 tdi disco for that money. Bullet proof engine providing timing belt has been done but just watch for rot in the boot floor as thats where mine went. Work well with a bob tail for depature angles and underneath its basically a Range rover classic chassis so nice and simple.

i was into off road for years . And have just stopped after wreaking some many trucks . lol

for 1400 quid look for a discovery 200TDI . A three door is best as 5 doors have problems with rust on rear door shuts . 200TDI is the best engine by far . parts well cheap and lots of mods for them too . check for rust on body mounts . rear floor . high millage shouldn't be a problem if its been looked after.
Or nissan terrero / Ford merrick 2.7 TD is a GREAT truck

As for Jimny i had one . piece of shite on road and so cramped don't waste your cash.

Sj are full of rot

fronty's are proper crap . not good at all

defender are great trucks but only buy good ones £2.500 + cheaper ones will be rubbish

Can't beat a defender (there not called defender before 1991 I think it is, just a 110 or a 90). My dad sold a almost 20 year old 110 county with 150k on it, 2.5 td (much worse that the 2/300 tdi's) which struggled to reach 60. Sold it to a copper for 3.5k! They sell for silly money especially for what they are.
