View Full Version : Buying car in private sale

Hi peeps. My wife went to view a car today that is being sold privately. She told the guy she wanted it and they agreed on a price. The seller refused a bankers draft as he'd heard bad things about them and asked for a bank transfer, my wife getting the car once the money had cleared in his account. My wife refused and they agreed on cash, however he wants my wife and I to go to his house then he'll take us to his bank to have the money checked and put in his account and then we get the car.

This all sounds a bit suspicious to me, would anyone agree or am I just being ove-cautious?

Can he not count? Tell him cash on collection or nothing imo.

sounds a bit dodgy to me, why not check it himself :/

arrange to meet at the bank, have the cashier transfer the money over into his account or hand it to him from the cashier for him to do whatever he wants with.

the journey between his house and the bank with you carrying copious amounts of cash is the only strange thing i guess :$

Maybe he wants the notes checked.

He's either an overly paranoid fuckwit or he's got something planned. It's not like you can cancel the cash once he's got it, so unless he thinks you are going to mug him for it back, or have him mugged or something, then he's being ridiculous and unnecessarily arsey or has something planned when you are at the bank, like the car being "stolen" and him disappearing or something... Just avoid it if it's hassle, I'm sure you'll find another car where the seller will be reasonable.

I could meet him at the bank, it's just because I don't know the area. I'll need to drive us to his house anyway so will prob just follow him to the bank. It was more that I've never heard of someone cashing the money before handing over the car keys, why not check the money himself and go to the bank after? Will prob let my wife go into the bank with him while I stay with the car, don't want to go into the bank, cash the money only to find he's arranged for someone to take the car away.

have you hpi the motor and how much were talking is it a few grand or a couple of hundred .you could always come with you when you get the cash out but do not hand it over until you are 100% sure that you are happy .also check id against the v5 and mot .

Don't really see what could go wrong at a bank but does sound a bit weird when he can just count out the cash himself

Also make sure that both VIN numbers match the one from the hpi check.

Golden rule, If in any doubt then walk away.

Not checked the HPI yet but will do and I want to check the car over before handing over any money, check the VIN matches the paperwork etc. I'm probably being paranoid cos someone has tried to scam me before but I'm hoping he won't try anything dodgy since we know where he lives.

but what if they pay the money into his bank and then doesnt give them the car...

I'd do this depending on how much cash it was.

Can you be 100% certain you know where he lives? He's not moving, using the property temporarily, renting, using a mates house, broken in whilst someone is on holiday or owt, parents house etc?

this, my mate sold an africa twin 750 a while back, there was a few good 20's in the bunch, the rest were fakes, was pretty hard to spot tbf.. they looked pretty real at the time

Nope. I wouldn't have thought twice about this had he not wanted to go to the bank... Just never heard of anyone doing this. The wife is determined to have the car, she doesn't think any of this is odd so I guess I'll just need to go and try my hardest to make sure things go ok.

I can see it from this point of view too, it's easy enough to check a few hundred pounds but dealing in thousands he maybe feels more comfortable using the bank to check it. I guess he is probably just trying to cover himself the same as I'm trying to cover us.

i wouldnt go to the bank mate, does he want you to hold his hand or something lol? tell him youre busy, and to check the money at his house. if hes that worried cant he just check each note individually?

Why don't you go in the car your buying with him to whichever bank your with and withdraw the money, give him the cash in the bank then give him a left back to his.

it sounds like he wants to just check the notes are real rather than he cant count/wants to steal it. to me it just sounds like hes over cautious.

Sounds like he is paranoid to be honest.

Why don't you drive to the bank, that way you know he is not taking you down a dark alley somewhere never to be seen again? :)

sounds dodgy as feck, although tbh i can spot a fake note a mile off; s i wouldn't be as paranoid.
