do you have to take a test to tow a trailer in a car, only a little trailer with a bike on?

Anything up to about 3.5 ton and you're fine. Anything over and you need a test.

is that the weight of the car+trailer or can tow up to 3.5 ton+car? if that makes any sense?

Thats the whole weight of car, the trailer, and whatever your towing as well!

as above on a standard car licence vehicle and trailer cant exceed 3.5 nor can the trailer weigh more than 85% of the towing vehicles kirb weight.
