i went to a driving experience today 70 odd miles away so im the motorway, doing 70 and it was doing about 3200 rpm, 80 was about 3500rpm and 85 was clocking on for 4000rpm, car seemed to be screaming for a 6th gear, is this normal?

She a 51 plate MK2 VTR with 53ish on the clock and totally standard.

:panic:

I do a 70 mile round trip to work everyday, which includes the M1 and M25 for about 60 miles. I've never found the gearbox in my Saxo VTR to be overly loud, obviously it's going to be a little noiser than a newer or better built car due to sound deadening etc but the VTR box is more than adequate for the motorway

Sorry i didnt explain clear enough, the gearbox isnt noisy at all, its the engine at high revs which is screaming lol, just wanted to know if it was normal for those sort of speeds to relate to that RPM in 5th gear.

My last car was a 1.6 8v astra and at 70 on the motorway it was only like 2500 rpm so it sat there quite comfortably, the VTR now sounds like i need to slow down if u know what i mean lol. Plus, sat doing 3200-4000 revs on the motorway for over an hour must being drinking fuel for fun, as apposed to doing 60 @ 2200rpm.

thanks for the replies.

Sounds fine to me mate and no there's no 6speed box that you can fit on a saxo

shouldn't be a problem since the speed limit is still 70 on motorways, not 85 :y:

soon to be 80 though.

Mine screams on the motorway, Did a 440 round mile motorway trip in my saxo with a 1.1 gearbox.

was 4k+ all the way there and back, Pretty good on fuel as i was only pressing the throttle abit.

well im glad that its normal, ive only had the car a few weeks, i recon on the 140 odd mile round trip i used about a 3rd of a tank so what is that about 20 litres? not sure what the saxo tank holds! £20 gets probably just short of half a tank with 2days extortionate petrol prices. probably not too bad on fuel then ey?

This my saxo run at 4k rpm with my 1.1 box, dreading 80 tbh it will kill it :(

Thats part of the fun of saxo's! Fuel figures and rpm your saying sound about right so no worries there. :)

345 miles on a full tank which works out at ~39mpg which includes very fast road, town and sunday driving
