Do not get the 3G, you can not run the new ISO 5 software on it.
Get the 3gs or higher. Ive just come from the 3gs in white, great phone and can not fault it. Works well with the new ISO 5 :D

Sold my 32gb 3GS to my brother for £90 and he loves it. I personally would have kept it but fancied a change.

yeah 3g is so slow compared to the S i found. That's now gone for the 4s but i could live with the 3gs speeds.

Now the 4s is out, I recon you'll get a 3gs within your price budget, £150 - £170 :)
oh and what the hell is this new software?!
Have a look at this: http://www.apple.com/ios/
Has some great little features. The main one I think is iMessage. Basically like BBM but for iphone running iOS 5 :y:
The 3gs is more than capable running it, as I did.
If my gf didnt need a new phone, I would of happily kept my 3gs.

what is "jailbroken"?
I know it means you can get apps for free...but how is it done/what happens to make it like that?

Basically it lets you to customise pretty much anything on the phone.
From amazing themes to changing the carrier name to anything, impressive stuff. And so easy to do, if anything goes wrong just restore the iphone and back up from before the Jailbreak and whalaa :A:
Google and YouTube 'iPhone cydia' Will be loads of info and guides to what it can do :y:

like above ^
you can make all the icons change, mess with the layouts, basically turn it into whatever you want and get apps that do cool things not available in the appstore
a must! imo..

Everyone says, once you jailbreak an iphone you'll never do anything else.
I havn't done it as im scared that'll go wrong, even though I know it can easily be fixed :homme:

Do you run cydia b0t13?
What happens when you need to update the phone to the new software?
Does it still run well with iTunes on the jailbreak?

I'm selling a 3gs 16gb for £160 ish, the lock buttons a bit temperamental though and you'd need a charger (couple quid on ebay)
Literally put a new screen on 2 weeks ago cos I cracked it but upgraded now. Its on vodafone...

The lock button on mine was a bit iffy too.
As for a charger, eBay ones are crap. Ive bought countless charger leads (usb one) from ebay and play cheap and they've all stopped working.
Would defo recommend the official Apple one :y:
Jay, even if it's not your network. You can officailly unlock it though Vodafone & Apple for free :A:

So I could get one on any network, waltz into apple, and say..."I'm on 02, sort it out?"
:y:
Cheers for all the help guys!

No, lol.
I unlocked my 3gs from Vodafone for my gf :)
Basically you fill in a form off the vodafone website.
They email the form to Apple.
Apple update their spread sheet, moving the phone from the Locked list to the unlocked list.
Email of confirmation from Apple / Vodafone.
Plug phone into iTunes, update, restore and then it's all done :A:

Dude, you can't do it wrong. The program shows you what buttons to hold.
Hold power buttons: 3...2...1...
Hold power button and home button: 10...9...8
Release power button but hold home button: 15...14
You really can't do it wrong.

I was relating more to when the software is installed and something goes wrong then.
With cydia, all you do is download it like an app and it jailbreaks the phone. Simples.
But there will still be some worry there :homme:
