View Full Version : Jailbreaking iOS5: How To (Now iPhone4S Complete)

Updated with iPhone4S information

Right, I've seen quite a few people saying they'd like to jailbreak their iPhones but they don't know how or they're worried of consequences.

Why?

Why jailbreak your iDevice? A none-jailbroken iPhone is about a tenth of what a jailbroken iPhone is. The iPhone in standard form is just way too restricted! Jailbreaking IS NOT just for getting free apps. It is to allow extra tweaks that allow your phone to do other things.

Jailbreaking, what is it?

Jailbreaking in simple terms, is allowing your iPhone to do what ever it likes. The biggest problem with the iPhone is that it is SO restricted! You can only download files onto you iPhone from iTunes or the App Store. Jailbreaking installs "Cydia" which is an alternative app store that has everything Apple won't allow on the App Store

As of a couple of days ago you can now jailbreak your iDevice properly.

Untethered: Untethered means that the iPhone can restart itself like normal. Once it's jailbroken, that's it. No attaching to your computer to restart. This is the prefered route people take.

Which should you use?

ALL DEVICES OTHER THAN iPHONE4S + iPAD2

First of all you need to go into your settings and find out what software you'e using. To do this, go to "Settings", "General" and check "Version"

You want to make sure you're on 5.0.1

If you're on an earlier version, simply plug in your iDevice, open iTunes, Sync iDevice and then update.

Right, you only need one file for this.

Download for Windows (https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.10b1.zip?attredirects=0&d=1)

Download for Mac (https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_mac_0.9.10b1.zip?attredirects=0&d=1)

Now, plug in your iDevice and open the Redsn0w file. Now click "Jailbreak and Install Cydia". Next it'll tell you to hold down two buttons for so many seconds. It counts this down for you on screen. It really is that simple.

You will then see a load of Matrix style text go across your iDevice screen. Just leave it to do its business. It's almost done. Next up you'll see a pineapple. This is your iDevice restarting. You're now done.

iPhone 4S + iPAD2

THIS IS MAC ONLY!!!

Make sure your iPhone4S firmware is at 5.0 or 5.0.1

For iPad, make sure you firmware is 5.0.1

Open the installer and connect your iOS device

Click "Jailbreak" in the window

If you get a "Restore" prompt on your device, ignore it!

Wait until the Absinthe installer bar is full and then press Jailbreak on either device

If you receive an error saying "Error establishing a database connection" then close the program and try again

Once the Jailbreak is complete, press on Cydia and let it do its work.

You're done!

Cydia & Tweaks

Ok, now your device is jailbroken. You'll now have "Cydia" on your springboard. Open this and wait for it to load. You'll get a few questions to answer and will then be asked to upgrade essential or complete. Just press complete.

Cydia is essentially a central place for websites to host files. To access these files, you must first add the websites "Repo sources". This is simple. Open Cydia, click "Manage" at the bottom and then "Sources". Now top right press "Edit" and then "Add" at the top left. Copy and paste then link and it'll add it.

Sometimes you'll see "Bad file" or some other error message. Don't worry about it. It's nothing

As far as Cydia tweaks go, I could sit here for days going through the good ones. All I can say is that whatever you want, just google it. You WILL find it.

Here are the top 10 tweaks!

SBSettings - One of the most well-known tweaks available to jailbreak users is SBSettings. With this tweak, users can modify settings right from the springboard without having to go through the Settings app. Makes changing your settings much easier. Install this. Should you have an issue, you can start your phone in safe mode and remove anything causing the issue

Winterboard - Another well known app is WinterBoard. This allows users to apply custom themes to different parts of their device, including the springboard, lockscreen, user interface, and many others. The possibilities are just endless!

Infinifolders - With iOS 4, Apple introduced folders in the springboard. While this was a nice addition, it wasn’t quite perfect; it only allowed users to put up to 12 apps in a single folder. So, what if you were to have more than 12 games? Two game folders? No, InfiniFolders is the answer. It removed the default limit of 12 apps and adds scrolling to folders in a very iOS-like way. InfiniFolders is available for $1.99 in the Cydia Store.

My3G - Ever wanted to make a FaceTime call but weren’t connected to Wi-Fi? Those days are over with My3G. My3G allows you to “trick” any application on your iDevice to believe it is connected to Wi-Fi instead of 3G. Use this to bypass FaceTime, YouTube video quality, and several apps on the App Store that require Wi-Fi for usage. My3G is available for $3.99 in the Cydia Store.

BiteSMS - The default messaging/SMS app on the iPhone is quite dull. BiteSMS adds a ton of new features, including quick compose/reply, signature, passcode lock, templates, and many others. This app is strongly recommended for text-heavy users. BiteSMS is currently available for $6.74 (regularly $8.99) in the Cydia Store for the holidays. Get it while it lasts!

LockInfo - You may already know that Apple’s notification system isn’t quite perfect. There’s always the single popup, which isn’t very useful when you have a ton of notifications. LockInfo solves this issue by putting every notification together in a UI that’s easy to use. Plug-ins are also available for other apps, too! LockInfo is available for $7.99 in the Cydia Store.

MultiIconMover - This is one tweak that should have been included in iOS itself. When moving icons on an iDevice, you have to move one at a time. This is a slow and painful process, so MultiIconMover was created. It allows users to move multiple icons to different pages at the same time with just a few taps and a click on the home button. Simple? Yes. Useful? Quite.

Zephyr

Zephyr is a brand new multitasking tweak. If you have two things going on at once such as Facebook and surfing the web, simply swipe to the left and right of the screen to switch between apps. Excellent little tweak!

You'll notice that these all have prices. Open Cydia and search for the tweak. If you have added all of the sources above, you'll probably see the same tweak several times. BLUE tweaks need to be paid for. However, the black ones are exactly the same and free. So of course, select a black one and install.

I have listed just a few "Sources" and "Tweaks". I could quite literally spend days listing tweaks. The best thing you can do is Google what you want to do. Apple say there's an App for everything. That is even more true when you're jailbroken. I still find new tweaks now.

*NOTE*

I have Jailbroken iPhone4's several times. I have never had a single issue in doing so. However, should you have an issue or problem, I am not responsible. By all means PM me or ask for help in here and I'll do all I can.

Ok guys, update time and this time it's entertainment and things to do!

GpsPhone - Available from several of the above sources.

GpsPhone is basically a Gameboy emulator that allows you to play Gameboy games on your iPhone. Simply download from Cydia, open and press on "Find Games". This will open a browser within the app and link you to a site to download ROMs (Games)

Gameboy A.D.X Plus - Available from several of the above sources.

Similar to above however this app will also allow you to play Gameboy Advanced games. Works in the same way with regards to getting games.

Psx4all - Available from several of the above sources.

Similar to the above two however this will allow you to play Playstation games in your iPhone/iPod/iPad. Works in the same way with regards to getting the games however the files are vastly bigger.

SNES A.D.X Plus - Available from several of the above sources.

You guess it. Same as the above but this one allows you to play SNES games. Works in exactly the same way.

Infinidock - Available from several of the above sources.

This tweak allows you to place as many icons in the dock at the bottom. Go to Settings>Infinidock to select how many you'd like in your dock. You can also have a scrolling dock that you swipe across.

FoldersInFolders - Available from several of the above sources.

Pretty self explainitary. This allows you to have folders inside folders on your home screen. Useful if you like an uncluttered iDevice.

iFile - Available from several of the above sources.

Must have app this one. Allows you to browser your file system on your iDevice. Allows you to copy and paste files in your directories. Works just like My Computer on your PC.

QuickMP3 - Available from several of the above sources.

This is a must have for any music lover. QuickMP3 is an excellent tweak that allows you to download music with 2 taps. Download the tweak, set it up in Activator (I have it set as Double tap the time) and activate. Search for a track and press it to download. There'a very few songs I haven't been Ble to find with this.

Only draw back with this is that it isn't added to your iTunes library. Instead use iFile to find "Downloads" and play your songs from there.

More to come...

Have you tried semi-tethered jailbreak on iOS5? Might be worth doing if you ever had to reboot your phone and away from a PC. Only downfall is you can't use any jailbreak features, safari or mail but atleast you'd be able to ring and send text messages.

What you've wrote makes sense to me but then I've dealt with jailbreaking before.

Jay, you good at all this. I'm on 4.3.3 (8J2). I can never remember which way round it when you say tethered or untethered. It's on the one where it CAN go flat and still be charged then turned back on. Is there a newer jailbreak in the same style?

Right, 5.0.1 (The latest) is having a UNTETHERED Jailbreak released in the next couple of days. Untethered is what you want.

I'll re-do this when it's released.

Might want to put a bit in about tiny umbrella. Its a good idea to save your shsh's incase your phone crashes. If you dont, you will have to update to the newest firmware, which could be 5.0.2 if apple release it, i.e. no jailbreak.

Update on the 4s jailbreak is that they are out of the sandbox (some security thing) untethered is expected in 1-2 weeks. Been waiting ages, 4s's are shit without jb.

So now my iPhone 4 has passed its 12month warranty period is there any downside to jailbreaking?

I've never really looked into it or considered it until seeing this thread.

Does it still operate the same as apple software? Do you loose apps or compatibility with apps you already have? Can you buy apple apps and they work fine in the future?

Some screen shots of a jailbroken one might be helpful.

Can you change your mind and go back to apple operating system at a later date?

Cheers

There are no downsides. Even if it broke in warranty you can restore the software and the jailbreak is untraceable, i did it just last week and got a replacement phone.

Yes it still operates exactly as was, in fact if you just jailbreak and dont change anything you will just have an extra icon on your screen, thats it.

You dont loose any apps or functionality.

You can still buy apps and sync with itunes as normal.

I can provide you screen shots but to be fair i havent installed winterboard or changed the appearance of my phone so my pics wont show anything different to what you see now really.

Yes you can change your mind at anytime and just use itunes to do a restore and its back to factory as if nothing has ever been done

I've already jailbroke my phone and noticed iBooks don't work. How do I apply the "b4" update from Redsn0w?

Scott
16th January 2012, 16:11
Just download the new redsn0w b4 from dev team, run it as normal i.e.

plug in phone then turn it off, start redsn0w, do the stuff for DFU mode, it will then ask you if you want to install Cydia etc... MAKE SURE YOU UNCHECK install Cydia if you already have it. Let it do its stuff. Done.

xBackup in Cydia is supposed to backed up things like packages and sources, not sure about cracked apps. Haven't restored from it so don't have experience of that.

Oh also, some stuff from 4.x.x might not be compatible with 5.0.1 jailbreak

If you've installed appsync which you will have, back up your phone and sync it. Your cracked jb apps (installous) will show up. Unsure about the cydia apps. If youve got loads of tweaks/apps just write them down or something so you remember what ones you had.

If i was you, id bite the bullet and update to 5.0.1 and jb before apple stop signing it. Apple will be releasing 5.1 soon to patch the jb. Up to you though.

Save your shsh's if you haven't already !

Just updated my 3GS to iOS 5, installed what Jay recommended, not a blip... Installed InfiniFolders again, and my phone instantly put all my icons back in the same box's they were in before, and back in the place i put the folders...

Downloading a few reccomendations off the lists Jay gave, some good stuff...

One to add.. ConfirmSMS - when you click send on an text message, it asks if you are sure... This is good, if like me, when you go for the 'P' you click Send, and end up having to send you text in 2 halfs..

Agree with Graeme. Mine seems faster if anything

Nope. If your phone breaks, reset it and it takes off the Jailbreak

Ah ok. I took the links from CBnet so if it is such a link, it's not me being paid for it :( lol

To the guy having issues, the method posted above should work. I'm 99.9% sure that the 3GS supports 5.0

It seems that iOS5.1 is out.

Just a reminder. If you're on a Jailbroken device, upgrading will remove anything to do with your jailbreak!

Quick q,

My iPhone 4 is going to be running the latest update in about half hr, currently running V 5.0.1.

Are there any known issues with Jailbreaking Iphone (4)'s?

I'll be using redsn0w ver 0.9.14b2 which I believe is the latest version.

_________________________________

I don't want to brick it as I have a 3g with the chipset that bricks if you upload the ipad baseband! Now has no IMEI bluetooth address or WIFI. The phone was already jailbroken by a shop but crashed majorly (couldn't make or recieve calls) and got stuck in the connect to itunes screen - identicle to restore mode but I haven't ever put it in to it and Itunes couldn't restore it error (1).

So I decided to redsn0w it but didn't read the blog, but it would seem it possibly had been bricked anyway - smashed digitizer but after that stopped making calls ect and wants to be restored by itunes lol

3g is running 5.1.1 3Gs software grrr

Anyway.... it doesn't look like that's going to be fixed unless the dev team release an unlock or something.

______________________________

So anyway, now I've waffled about that...

Will I need to backup my Iphone 4 to itunes, and then restore from a backup once I've used redsn0w?

& is it litterally as simple as updating my iphone to the latest firmware, running redsn0w jailbreaking and installing sydia or do I need to click any of the other checkboxes?

Thanks for any help, I just don't want to kill my iphone lol

If you can wait a couple of hours I'll look into this mate.

I haven't heard of any issues with regards to jailbreaking 4S's

It's a 4 sorry I've jailbroken it but cydia is playing up, firstly it had a blank icon so I just boot it and it started working but now it crashes and so does winter board :z

I'm thinking I'm going to have to restore it and re-jailbreak it at this rate?

Had this issue myself. Abit of a pig but I had to do exactly that. Sounds like the Jailbreak didn't install properly!

So if I just head back to itunes, restore the mofo and jailbreak it again it should fix her :)

I'm running 5.1.1 & the latest version of redsn0w :)

Haha it's cool!

Annoying thing is, sometimes it works, but most of the time it crashes!

At the moment I'm adding your links to my sources, thanks for this thread :).
