Basicly I'm getting very bored of my car at the moment, as you do.

I have (let's say) £1,500 to spend on:

- coilovers and dished wheels
- or buy a new car and sell mine (mx5, 200sx or something drifty)

Help me make a dessision guys

mx5, more fun, different type of driving, whereas if you spend it on a saxo, you won't see it ever again

+1 on that or wait a bit longer till after winter and get some thing a bit better when you've got more money

I would also imagine MX5s are at the cheapest now being winter and all! If you were gunna buy in summer I would say prices are a bit more expensive!

yeah the mk1 is next to nothing now for a goodish one.

does anyone know what they are like to work on and live with?

5s are alright, easy to work on, easy to boost. Not best on mpg but ok.
If you havent had rwd before then treat it with resect as they do tend to slide easy. Id say get one after christmas if you have on had fwd before.

I mostly drive RWD's at work (a lovely merc sprinter).

I've driven RWD before but never lived with it, looks like an MX5 is an option

What about an 200sx s13?

Cue me or Titch.....

Go for the Mx5, you won't regret it. Any questions you have about them go ahead while its all fresh in my head lol currently doing lots of work to mine. Paid £500 for it btw.

I thought the same thing a few months ago. Decided not to renew my insurance and am looking for something new.
I thought, what's the point in spending £1k+ on something you don't even want?

It needs a respray but mechanically it's spot on. Just done brake pads and the rest was all mods.

They're built to last and mine is producing 114bhp still at 21 years old and 124000 miles. (made 115 when new). Really good, honest little bastards that are fun to drive. Mpg is a bit shit though. 200 miles to a tank if you're lucky lol

That's where its good, 30 litre tank so its about £45 to brim it.

i wish my tank was that cheap :(

then again the bike is not even £20 to fill...but that wont even last 100 miles!

go for an mx-5. i loved driving my dads mk2 1.8s when i had my saxo.
it wasnt quite as quick as my vts but was more fun to drive and the driving position was better, and rwd doubles the fun!

That's a roll of dice. If you buy another car you may have to spend extra to fix bits and bobs on it. My angle would be to save the money and spend it when you actually need it.

MR2 over an MX5 tbh.

Dosn't have the hairdresser image.

Buy 1 in Super Red and people will think you are rich.

Ha i was thinking about either a mk1 mx5 or an s13 180 or s14 200.

But if i wait another 8 months, another ncb will nock insurance right down even more!

I do love my little saxo, but i like going sideways :D and miss my commodore :(

mx5 then make it low & wide and instantly lose the hairdresser vibe.

This forum should be called the 'I once had a saxo but moved on to a E46 bmw or mx5 forum'

Really cant see the fascination with the MX-5's, I think they are horrid cars, Never seen on that I'd actually think to myself, 'I'd have one', Don't think i've ever seen one that I liked in all honesty

holdawayt
21st November 2011, 16:39
Good luck insuring a BBR lol.
The other option is to use the S/C from a Mini Cooper S as it's a straight fit. Or off the shelf turbo kits are available for under a grand.

To be honest though, mine's a 115bhp 1.6 and will easily keep up with a VTS and then you've got the drift fun too. I don't know where people get this whole "slow as a transit van" thing from. I think you'd be surprised how nippy the na is. Especially when you consider it will rev to 8000rpm.

marinemackay2003
21st November 2011, 16:41
much cheaper to convert the mini supercharger

bloke on one of the 5 forums does the all in conversion for a very good price

langy88
21st November 2011, 16:42
My insurence isn't that high I've got 3 years no clams, so I can get a 1.8 but not a 1.6 import for some reason

Don't telly mind the image a car gives off, saxos don't really have a good image. I'd rather be a hairdresser than a Barry boi.

Don't really like s14 they look very fat. S13 all the way

holdawayt
21st November 2011, 17:02
Yeah the imports tend to be more expensive to insure. The uk equivalent 1.6 is only 90bhp so steer clear of that one.

langy88
21st November 2011, 17:04
Would it even move with 90bhp

21st November 2011, 17:14
No. You'd be better off pushing.

no chance, my dads 1.8 couldnt quite keep up with my vts
