I know its been covered before back in Jan 2010,
But we have a few new members now, so lots of new opinions.
So just wondering..
Would you buy a previously damaged car/cat D writeoff?
If so or if not, why?

Probably would if it's a lot cheaper or I was going to run it into the ground... As much as I know there'd be nothing wrong with it, can't help but think it'd be a bit of a problem when you come to resell it though.

I don't think it can be generalised depends entirly on the car, type of car and what your going to use it for.
if its a old saxo then i wouldn't be fussed just try and get it cheaper.
if it was say a megane 225 f1 then i would consider it but would think of the depriciation and would need pics of the before damage and the repair process
if it was a car i was going to modify such as an engine transplant then i wouldn't be worried at all, just as long as its cheaper.
tbh catd cars are no problem whatsoever as long as it has been repaired properly.

Exactly,
It's harder to sell a Cat D car,
I know its only light damage but still people get put off the idea.
I seen an absolutely gorgeous A3 S3 replica the other day and i'm talking stunning,
The price was about £3000 for a 56 reg on 60k,
Which i thought a good price but then i seen Cat D writeoff which put me off for some reason, because i know its only light damage.

cat D is bugger all, doesn't even show on log book. Its never put me off, i've always had cat C cars that i've run myself and i've repaired plenty and sold them on. When you see 52 plate Saxos getting classed as Cat C for the want of a headlight it makes a mockery of the system, the ones i would worry about are the accident damaged cars that haven't gone through the insurance that have been put back on the road, don't show up on hpi or log book because no claim was made and theres plenty of people do it, how often do you see people on here who have hit a fence/kerb/lamp post, got the car home and put it back together, no record of it ever having been in an accident and looking at 75% or so of them, they should have been cat B break only tbh

Have they all sold well Jas?
As in no bother, no problem just gone like any other car.
People don't stick thier nose's up and kick the tyre's a bit more than usual?
Say you want to buy a Cat D car is there anyway off checking what was damaged on the car?
Like a HPI check but more towards the damaged side?
Is that a VIC? Just in case the seller says 'o ye all it needed was a new bumper' when in fact the car needed alot more, if anyone understands that?

Probably not.

if they stick their noses up then why have they come to look at a car they know has been damaged?
as far as i know, theres no way of finding out what damage was sustained other then using your eyes and common sense. If you're not 100% clued up or used to looking at damaged cars i'd steer clear

I agree with the resale part,
But what if you wanted to keep it until it took its last breathe?

More on insurance and harder to resell.
It's really not worth the hassle, unless you have money to throw away?

might be okay if they have extensive proof of the damage and the repair job. pictures of the damage, reciepts for work etc

I thought if a car is "CAT" whatever, your insurance would be more?

Not sure man..
Has anyone else insured a Cat D car?
Has it been more expensive or ..?
Anyone shed some light over this?

Wouldn't bother me.
Not like the car's been in a major overhaul to be made road legal again, and it's a weapon for knocking down the price, despite it being cheaper than non-cat cars anyway!

+1 :y:
PS; a vic check has NOTHING to do with repairing the damage on the car..
VIC : Vehicle Identity Check. if its had a vic check it doen't mean its roadworthy.

id have no issues tbh
i think my next car is gonna be a cat D, fancey an l200 or a range rover, should be able to pick something up for a fair price, as said, cat D is fuck all, doesnt really effect sales either, long as its not obvious a monkey fixed it

think about all the cars that have had major repairs due to their value that dont have anything on record

As said iv had a few myself and have repaird them
Member of salvage website so I'm Always browsing for a bargain!
Tbh again as said
I had a cat c saxo few months back only needed a light and the bumper was scuffed so I left that! Where as I got a cat d corsa for the mrs and it needed a full front end and a pull on the inner wing!
And iv got a saxo now that needs more work/parts than the one officially written off! This one was just bought as "needing tlc " off eBay
There's more cars than you think that have had accident damage just because they come b k hpi clear doesn't mean they havnt been
Depends purely on the age /value of the car more than level of damage sustained!
And all that about insurance been more expensive is shite! Makes no difference wha so ever! All be in SOME will only insure a cat c 3rd party but only a few of the less common ones

Salvage website?

21st November 2011, 22:21
Yes and no
yes if i was repairing myself, yes if i knew/had pics of the extent of the damage.
no if the above wasnt true.
Been there done that, cat D 200sx. was 1" shorter on one side than the other and had half of the car been repainted. Didn't drive straight and couldn't be sorted without jigging etc, i couldn't even find what was bent.
The newer the car more likely it is to be cat D vs damage

I agree with the resale part,

If you're going to keep it and run it into the ground then fine as long as its been repaired to a satisfactory standard.
Personally still wouldn't though, personal preference.

My mum owned a Cat C Y reg Clio and it was a spot on little motor everything had receipts for the new parts from Renault, and the correct paint from them too, she traded it in and got a grand- the dealer did an HPI- after taking it as part ex trololol

sorry man, it has to be said...
S3 replica
:homme:
either get the real thing or just get an A3... badging a car up as something its not is for faggots, not to offend anyone, its just a massive pet hate of mine
as for it being cat-D, i'd say if you're going to keep it until its in the ground then do it, do the usual make sure it looks alright, check where its been repaired etc and chances are it'll be sound. But selling it will be a bitch though, i bought my 106 for £1500, then about a year later i cat-D'd it on a roundabout and when i sold it privately i struggled to sell it for more than £300, even though it still had less than 30k miles on it, but thats just my opinion

Could i just point out that i didn't say i was going to buy it..
But it looked gorgeous on BBS alloys and on its arse, also all it had was the S line badge on the grill. But c'mon even if it did have a S line badge a car that stunning and considering how low it was i think people would get the idea that you wouldn't want to race.

so they'll nick it instead

So its not an S3 replica?...
Why would people not want to race you because it's low? If people want to race then they'll see it's modified and race you, besides you've seen awol tv mate...

Putting a gti kit on a car is fine, I agree with that as it does make them look nicer... Just don't add the gti badge then drive around pretending it is one

depends, if it was a good car yeah. i went to look at a vts but when i hpi'd it it came up as cat d, the guy suddenly turned into a contender for worst actor of the year claiming he knew nothing about it. i walked away from that one. i probably would have had it if hed been honest from the off because it was a good price and very clean
