I recently had the same noise on my gti, checked everything I thought it could be, driveshaft, drop links, etc all fine then my mate had a look and checked the top mount bolt and it was loose, tightened it and the noise has gone! worth a try mate!

Cheers guy's, put new engine mount in not long ago just been out to double check it. Not the gear box cleaned rebuilt around 10000mile ago, new clutch fitted when box was out, checked drop links give the car a good side to side shake and grabbed hold of them but no play in the ball links, think the plan is to change the lower arm bushes cv joints and clamps bolts ect, both sides of course, these have not been done from new 95k ago so needs doing, gone to check the shocks while all apart hope this sorts it out, if not new drop links a 5min job :y:
