hi all,after picking your brains again,bought an 02 plate vtr last night,had a three hour drive home.which it made fine,but the temp gauge does not work,it moved up a bit at one point but only a bit and also the central locking does not work,it has no remote which is fine but would have thought the central locking would work from one of the locks but it does,nt,any ideas,dont think there connected but thats what i,m hoping to find out,also whats my best place to start to fix it,cheers

Maybe your guage is working fine but the engine is not running hot enough to make it move. Check thermostat is still in place - could have been removed at some point to stop overheating. In that case check condition of the radiator - they can rust out quite badly unless they are aluminium.
As for central locking it should work off the drivers lock (not passenger or boot lid though) - if not then check fuses, then look inside the door for loose or damaged wiring. may need to replace the door locking solenoid of the drivers door.

Id say a lose connection to the temperature sensor on the head, even with the thermostat removed its likely it would get warm enough to move the gauge even in this cold weather
