Just thought I'd mention a tactic I've just tried... and been successful with!
So my insurance is due at the start of december, my current provider sent me a renewal price, bit high in my eyes.

Did some shopping around, found it about £100 cheaper elsewhere, rang my insurance company, told them.... they knocked off £200

Pretty happy with that result, and I thought insurance companies were tight fisted g*ts!

Theres loads of ways to knock it down...i.e additional drivers such as parents with full licences...but on my insurance when i changed my dad to female it knocked another £230 off so got my mum and aunt on...lower annual mileage...

i'd done all that, i literally just rang and said, look i've found it cheaper, do something or i leave!
they knocked £200 off, no questions asked!
just a bit annoying they didn't do it to start with!

ooh lol did you have to prove the quote to them or did u just say 'ive found it cheaper' then they lowered it?

'i've found it cheaper'
'oh how much?'
'£100'
'oh we will go £200 lower then!'

so when i say no questions asked, i lie :P

It dropped £190 for me when i told them i worked in a nightclub. They said its because its "unsociable" hours that there wont be as much traffic on the road so it lowered my quote.
