I once sold a car to a friend , no sorry lets get this straight I once let my friend buy my old E90 BMW off the lease company once I had finished with it.

The car had 90000 miles on when he bought it, it's now done 150000 miles. Every time there is a problem with the car , he rings me !

I am not a warranty company, or responsible for it going wrong

Is it ever a good idea to sell a car to friends or family ?

I only ask this as my dad wants to buy my current car .....

I wouldn't to a friend, I would if it was my dad though.

I'd do it if I knew the car was all good etc. Wouldn't want to sell my friend a shed.

But if he had any problems with it and came to me I'd tell him to piss off.

Id never ever sell to friends or family.

Im self employed and also wont even consider doing work for friends or family. Me refusing often offends them but meh...

Yes but I'd tell them it's bought as it is and if they bitch and whinge if there's any problems then I would tell them to fuck off.

I would but then it would bother me if they didn't keep it up to my standards.

And "sold as seen"..

I bought the golf from a friend and would happily sell to another. However I'd make it clear that Ill happily offer advice about the car but any faults are purely their responsibility once they hand over the cash.

What is your excuse?

I sold my car to my uncle. Was very low and hit every speed bump.

2 days later, he rung up saying his hit the bottom of the car and could i rise the suspension. Told him it was sold as seen and he knew it was that low yet wants me to do him a favor. Do one.

Fuck off with sold as seen, means fuck all.

I let my brother buy my passat for next to nowt, and I would do it, but would explain to them that if anything goes tits up it's not my problem and if they whined at my, I'd tell them to do one

Done it before, no problems. Then again, none of my mates are the kind of people who would be so retarded as to think the car was anything to do with me once theyd bought it.

Sold a car to a mate and the head gasket went few months later. Obviously I didn't know it was going otherwise I wouldn't of sold it. He didn't moan about it, just sold it on. I did feel a bit guilty though.

Wouldn't do it again. Rather just get rid of it and know there's nothing to worry about.

sold my VTR to a friend on the premise that if it breaks its not my fault.

It has had a few problems and i always help him fix it but he never complains.

If it was anyone else though I wouldn't have sold it to them on the basis that something will undoubtedly go wrong.

humm, tbh i'm always up for helping mates out with their cars if they ever ask for it, if i bought one off them and it went wrong, im fairly sure theyd help me out if they knew more about it than i did, just like i would them if theyd bought the sax off me. But by no means would i 'blame' them for it, cars go wrong, it happens. i guess it depends on the friends

this!

friends and family are always asking me to do bits on there car! and i used to doit! but wont anymore!

becuase simply they expect it for nothing and i felt bad chargeing them what i would if it was say a friend of a friend or a nabour! and it wasnt realy worth my while the time i was spending to make sure it was bang on so there was no comebacks/mither etc

only little bits like bits of rust or a scrape etc! and basic mecanical like service or brake pads etc stuff like that!

one example i use is a friend whos fiesta failed its mot on sold minor corrossion on the b post at the bottom (common problem just the outer skin) and then a small patch on the sills underneath!

so as he was skint i told him to get the stuff and il just doit one saturday for him! (well got a kfc for it lol)

so anyway as he was skint just fiberglassed it all up and it passed! then when he came to sell it someone looking at it noticed it was fiberglassed! (tbh i didnt hide it that well just got it throuh mot for him)

anyway he then went round saying i boded his car bla bla! i even told him it was only a temp repai to get it through the test it would need a proper patch welding in when hes got the money

but the cheeky bastard i saved him £150 on welding when he had no job and was on his arse! and turned down some last min overtime at work for it! NEVER AGAIN!

however with one mate i do make an execption and have done and helped do loads of work on his saxo for him (mods etc) and i did also sell it him aswell but i knew it was spot on! i doit for him though purely becuase he does have knowlage but no tools! and he does also help me out when needed with all sorts!

I'm selling mine to a friend next year... He knows that if it breaks or needs work, it's nothing to do with me!

N.B: My car is mechanically sound apart from a couple issues he knows of.

Nah I never would. I bought my car off a sort of mate at work and had nothing but trouble for the first 3 months. No matter what goes wrong, or how much you know it isn't their fault, you can't help feeling resentment so don't do it! Or, make them sign a 'bought as seen' form and then there can be no real arguments!!

I sold my first Corsa to a mate, and my Primera

both had problems but my mates never came to me for solutions

I sold my old moutune ST to a friend, the gearbox went pop... considering it was in 2009 and the car was a 2008 he knew how it had been used and what not before he bought it.

He still said he was ripped off even though i sold the car £750 under its value :n:

Ever since as a general rule i haven't sold any cars to friends/family only via pistonheads/autotrader

As others have said money doesn't mix well with fam/friends! I probably wouldn't as a rule just because they would come whining to me if shit went south :n: And I don't want that aggro!

I think it depends entirely on what sort of car you are selling and its circumstances.

I've given my brother my spare VTS that i used as a track toy for free, he's not going to whinge when it breaks is he?

Its all circumstances really. A normal car sale (NO, i'd rather pay to sell it on autotrader)

I once brought a car off of a friend..... Was ragged to pants and blew up 3 months after I got it.... So don't sell or buy from friends lol

Never, ever, ever!

Like you said, if something goes wrong with the car, it's automatically your fault and they want their money back..

The problem all you guys have said was the least of my worries!
A few of my friends are all shouting first dibs on my car when i sell it but i say NOO
Purely becuase i will probably cry if i saw someone else driving MY car around, or if they modified it and ruined it, or if they wrote it off/damaged it.
Also just becuase of the fact i made my car look the way it is, and everyone knows it as my car so they would probably be like 'who the fucks that driving Mr LSOfreak's car??

when it comes to the sad time of selling my pride and joy, it will have to be to someone far away so that i never see it again or hear that its been written off :(

i would, all my mates and family understand that i wouldnt sell them a dodgy car, and that if something happens its just life, its nothing to do with me
