Don't buy

With so many good superminis now available, these 3 have been left behind - and we advise against buying any of them.

Fiat Punto

£7,452 to £12,097

Contrary to what Fiat's adverts say, there's not much spirit in the Punto.

It is spacious for a supermini but apart from that it falls well short of its competitors. The drive, not much fun to start with, is accompanied by rattles and squeaks ”“ and the Punto is notorious for clutch problems.

Citroen Saxo

May 96 to Feb 04

Up to £8,100

Gone but sadly not quite forgotten. Top of a long list of owners' complaints about the Saxo are the limited space inside and its constant gas guzzling.

They should also worry about its woeful level of crash protection. It is fairly reliable but that's not enough ”“ don't go near it.

Peugeot 106

Sep 91 to Sep 03

Up to £7,375

The106 is built on the same chassis as the Saxo, so it's no surprise it has poor safety design and a cramped cabin.

Carrying large, awkward loads isn't a problem because the seats are particularly easy to fold down. And good visibility makes it easy to park.

Owners dislike the brakes, steering, gear change and the listless engine, all of which make for a wholly unpleasant driving experience.

Those three be the cars I have owned lol

I saw this last year. Thought the saxo write up was a little harsh. Yeah fair enough they are a bag of bollocks for reliabiliy, crash protection, fuel consumption (except mine ) etc.

But they drive rather well and I've had a social life out of it too :Y:

Gas guzzling? thats a new one unless theres something wrong.

I accept my car for what it is, i know that its not the best made but for the money you buy them for you cant expect much.

Also this really tweaks my nipplets, people comlaining that its small. Sorry but did you go blind just before you bought the car and sat inside it!?! Its a freaking supermini! You dont buy a rubber dingy then complain that its not the QE2!

agreed, the market that Which? magazine is aimed at is the slightly more affluent reader, therefore I cant see a lot of point in doing a second hand supermini review.

The engines are relatively poor on consumption compared with other manufacturers engines - mainly because the engines for the saxo are from a 8-10year old design. The modern PSA engines are some of the best in world now (well the HDi engine range is in the sub 2litre range - petrol market is more competetive)

that magazine is blaspheming!
Look at the video of Topgears VTS vs Clio 182, sure the Clio pulls on the straights....but the S would rape it round bends...
:p x

true, i think the magazine was referring to day to day driving though.

There was no point in reviewing older cars against new ones, unless they are showing the progress, if the new cars were worse than the old ones people would be livid.

Sack of S**t reports like that are. Its as though the cars are being compared to a new style family car or something, especially when saying theyre small :err:

For the age of the design you couldnt really find a better supermini than the saxo/106.
