Is it a saxo?
would say number 1 is gearbox on its way out and number 2 will be emmissions...
Coilpacks are easy on saxos as im presuming thats what your looking at?

number 1 the gear box probably not a major problem yet tho,
number two engine mangement light will be because it needs a new coil pack so the car mite be miss fireing, this is what happend with me anyway. Coil packs easy to replace just quite expensive to buy.

1. the gearbox probably isnt major YET but if its on its way already then will only be a matter of time...
2. You're right, the EM light might well be because the coilpack isnt firing properly... but if they're got a new pack then why doesn't the seller fit it and solve the problem? (answer: perhaps there's something else causing the misfire)
Trust me on that, a misfire is one of the worst problems a car can have. Simply because the list of possible culprits is massive. ECU, coilpack, lambda sensor, temperature sensor, spark plugs, dirty fuel filter, blocked injectors and any of the throttle body sensors are just some off the top of my head.
Luckily on a saxo they're easy to get to and clean/reasonably cheap to replace. It's just the time and effort involved in hunting the dodgy sensor/connection down

yeah i recon with 200 quid at a push if u did change the gear box now and you have a coil pack you would manage it

Why is he giving you a coilpack with it still misfiring? surely you would just fit the coilpack and have one less thing to explain to a prospective buyer?
If i were you, unless you are getting this car dirt cheap. Avoid it, sounds like nothing but trouble...

Is it this one?
If it is a MK4 im sure coilpacks just make the power delivery erratic and are quite costly to repair. I also know there is more than one on the 1.8t versions. weather this is the same for the 1.4 im not sure...

Looks like you will need to budget in £200 for the gearbox on its own...

tbh slight winge says to me that the gearbox is on its way, it wont be anything else apart from the gearbox as it only makes that noise in two out of six gears...

problem is in that price range you are searching the dregs of the market so there is a slim chance of finding an honest car...

mk4 gearboxes are crap and expensive to buy even secondhand, steer clear. at the sort of money you've got to spend i'd bin the idea of a mk4

THIS
My gearbox went which decided to piss oil all over the clutch making that slip like a bitch so bye bye gearbox and clutch :bored: :wall:
There SLOW, roll like fuck around corners the best thing about them is the interior and the general look of them.
More about the gearbox problems Clicky (http://www.btinternet.com/~a_hutton/VW_Gearbox_Failure.htm)
If you want a Mk4 golf that bad get a turbo diesel or 1.8t, Really wouldn't waste your money on a 1.4/1.6.

Golf 1.4 is the worst of the bunch, engines are weak, as are the rest of the transmission.
Tbh, I'd rather have a saxo that one..I've had the GT Tdi,and still don't like mk4's.
And for the prices above, I'd be weary.
