As I'm at uni I leave my car at home for four days
When I came to set off today, I let the handbrake off and the rear wheels were still locked :/
I tried to drive forward but could hear the rear wheels skidding, they eventually moved, disengaging the hand break
Any ideas why??

You`ll have to take both rear wheels off & free the handbrake off, checking whilst you do so why they`ve stuck on.

simply stuck, most likely from being sat in the cold for 4 days.

Well it's freed up now, would it not just be from being stood?

Yeah, more than likely..because of the cold weather.

Tap at 12-6 & 9-3 on the back of the Drums with a mallet a few times, if they get really stuck.. Does it for me.

It's a VTR... it'll have discs.

Probably worthwhile fitting a pair of new handbrake cables. The callipers wont usually stick unless the pad carrier is rusty. Inside the callipers is full of grease.

What's changing cables like?

I shall find out the damage when I get it pre-mot'd

Cables are easy to change it will of just been rust on the discs sticking on the pads usually goes with a crack when they free off.just leave it in gear and some bricks under the wheels.

Changing handbrake cables is easy, just need a pair of axle stands and a 13mm spanner/socket.

Also, take the pads out, clean up the sliding faces of the pad carrier and the 90degree pin.

If you're leaving it sat for a few days/weeks just leave it off and put a brick or something infront of the tyre so it wont seize.
