gear issues

Hi all, i have got a mk2 vtr. When i go to drive the last few weeks it just will not go into 1st but then a few minutes later it will, however now it wont go into reverse either but after a couple of minutes it will.

It does this if the engine is running or not and it feels like something is blocking it going in. the reverse one the best way i can think of describing it is like in a ford you have to lift a bit up to go into reverse or it wont let you very much like that.

What could this be? Linkages?

Could be the linkages. Have you looked at them? Is the clutch cable adjusted correctly?

no but the gear stick feels really loose, its a brand new clutch as well so it could be cable but why would it go in sometimes?

Do you mean it won't go in when cold or it just does this randomly? If it's just random, I'm having a similar problem at the moment. I think it's clutch related but I might be wrong...
