View Full Version : Another what car thread! DC2 or boost the vts
Chris_O

Following the dc2 thread I made last week, I just want to see the general opinion from people on here.
Do I:
1) Get rid of the s, hopefully for around £2000, and buy a nicely spec'd dc2 (decent coilovers/braces/exhaust etc ) for around the £4000 mark.
Or:
2) Keep the s and turbo it. Worked out it will cost me around the £2500 mark all in to get it to around 180/90 bhp on standard internals.
I know it's my decision at the end of the day, however I just want to get some opinions off of people on here as I keep changing my mind.
I know I may not see all the money back if I spend it on the s, but i've accepted the fact a long time ago that's what happens when you modify cars. I'm also aware that dc2's may be seen as expensive for what they are i.e. age etc, however i'm sure they will hold their value pretty well.
Fire away!! :P
Edit: bearing in my mind I would also be considering boosting a dc2 if a get one after a year or so of ownership

As much as I slate Honda's for being well overpriced etc, and overhyped.
I'd rather have a DC2 over a saxo, boosted or not.
The Honda will be better in the long run if further modification is what you're after.

I still think there are better cars for the money out there though.
But if a DC2 is what you're after, each to their own and all that jazz.

I can see where this one's going haha. I just don't know if i'm going to regret it if i get rid of the vts as i've wanted a boosted one for a good few years. Or should i just man the fuck up, get rid of it and get a better car lol

Can I just have a couple of examples from yourself as to what you think is better out there for the money? Just want ideas...

Sometimes it's just better to cut it off.
I enjoyed my VTS when i had it, but it was getting to the point where i was spending money on mods to see no real benefit other than on the track, and so just became more annoyed with it as a daily.
Just one day decided to sack it off, and buy a more sensible daily which as a bonus is a more exciting / quicker car.
I miss the simplicity of driving a saxo, but when it's gone and you've upgraded you'll see it's worth it.

id go for the DC2. im with ash, and id say there are better cars out there for the money.
but from the two, it would be the honda all day long.

I know it's the generic "BMW are the best" blah blah stuff.
But an E36 M3 for me over the dc2 every day.
more comfortable and useable day to day.
quicker
RWD
321bhp, and for a couple of hundred you'll be seeing closer to 360bhp.
a LOT more torque than the honda, and smooth torque from 2k to 8k rpm
decent MPG
leather interior (debatable as to weather it's better / equal to the recaro's of the honda though. I've sat in and really like both)
same age, but more durable for the age (even though the majority will still need replaced bushes etc)
or if something more modern is your desire, an E46 330.
Chris_O
28th December 2011, 23:36
Cheers for the suggestion. I have considered the beemer route but I don't think I will get a decent example of a top end e46 for my price range + the insurance is a lot more than the dc2. Also not a huge fan of the e36 shape to be honest

Fair play, as I say. each to their own.
Finding a good example does seem pretty damn hard at the mo. and the price for an average one still seems to be around 4 - 5k.
e46 330's aren't as cheap as i thought either. still seem to fetch around the 6k mark.
Perhaps a scoob or evo? (I don't have a clue how much either go for) But the running costs will undoubtedly be higher and so i'd hace the Honda over either.
TypeRDavid
28th December 2011, 23:41
RS Clio for that sort of money, although you simply can't ignore the Civic Type R for what little money you can pick them up for these days.
All depends on what you can afford, you have to think about a few things, how much is it going to cost in the long run, MPG, Reliability etc
For me I'd go with the Civic, purely for reliable fun, although again the Clio would be a good contender.
Ashleyp

Good point David.
the K20 in the EP3 is pretty good, for both MPG and not bad power from a 2.0N/A
It's certainly not as 'raw' a drivers car as the DC2, but more modern and probably a better 'all round' option.
Ep3 is more common though, so if you're after a rarer sight, the DC2 is still the choice to have.
I like the 172 / 182. but EP3 over the RS for me after driving both.

I wouldn't pay the money for a DC2 now - especially when you could pick up a 54 plate EP3 with subtle Mods and around 50-60k for around 4k these days.
DC2's are awesome (just have to look at my boyfriends to see that) but still worth silly money that I wouldn't really want to pay for their age.

From wanting to sell my car then turbo'ing it, I can say turbo tbh, totally diff car, a lot rarer then a dc2 aswel as being a lot faster
Ppl who've never driven/been in a boosted Saxo or 106 can't imagine how much fun they are
But as said its ultimately your decision, id say if you know someone's who you can have a go of in a boosted tu.... Definitely have a try and see what you think before you sell up

For 4k, i too would pick an E36 ///M3 over a DC2, but the running costs of the ///M3 would be far far higher than the Honda.
The Evo's also never make 321bhp, closer to 300bhp. And you would need to spend silly money getting 1 up to 360bhp. Certainly not a couple of hundred.
And decent MPG isn't true either.
I would say a 328i Sport with M50 inlet, BBTB, Exhaust, Filter, Remap and some suspension changes would be more of a similar all round comparison for the DC2. Performance and running costs/ initial outlay etc.
You would get a sorted 328i Sport for 4k.

all I know is he did one trackday with no spoiler, and it was sketchy, and he fitted that - along with other things- and proceeded to do his fastest lap times ever.
It will help with side to side stabilty at high speeds (feels funny saying that when the car in question is a DC2) but it will also more than likely lift the front wheels and lose traction. It will have some sort of benefits, but it will also have greater draw-backs.
Is it possible that the sketchy-ness was maybe reduced when the other things were fitted though??

ill find out at the weekend as im yet to get it on the bridge :fcuk: (got fibreglass bonnet etc to go on so havent bothered yet)
but just say 850kgs... which makes me 256bhp/tonne or somewhere around there, which puts me around about these cars:
Jaguar XKR R - (234)
Maserati 3200GT - (237)
Lotus Exige (S1) - (247)
Mercedes CLS55 AMG - (252)
Aston Martin DB9 Volante - (260)
Porsche 911 GT3 (996) mk1 - (271)
anyone interested can find out here:
http://westfield-world.com/power-to-weight.html
these are just a bit fun really, theres alot more to it then that (gear ratios etc etc) but tbh i could add quite a few cars to that list ive made fools of :)

I'd go for a dc2 out of the two. I'd also choose a dc2 over an ep3 as i think ep's are far too common and arent quite as 'special' to be in. ep's are to undramatic in comparison
