Right, had a bonus while ago, taxed at 40%, too much tax, when rang and found it all out, worked out work had cocked up, put wrong tax code in, so sorted all that, but i had to write to them asking for my tax back, i did, also asked if they could email me with progress, never heard anything but got an my money back, but had been taxed more on my wages due to this cock up, ive just checked my email and I have an email from hm revenue and customs, saying im entitled to another refund, i thought i would of been, they have an attachment on it of a form, looks very real, but asks for bank account and card details plus the security code, all the links on the email go to the site, but do you need the secuity number to give a refund? ive never had anything like this, im going to ring them tomorrow before doing anything, just wondering as ive never bothered with these kinda emails as they are normally blatantly fake, but too many things here that seem to much of a coincidence.
so what do you think?? They have all the ads about sorting tax out now. like said not doing anything till ive rang them

Yeah, always amazes me how much effort people will put in to fleece people of their cash in an illegal way. I bet if they put half that effort in to something legit, they would do just as well...

Only email will be general correspondence though wont it? Like resolution of a query etc? Wouldn't have thought they would email first either though...

It must be a fake email if its asking for bank details.

Aye, I'm sure we get a fair few emails fired back and forth from them at work, but as I work at an accountants, thought it would be fairly standard, wasn't sure how it panned out for just general public

I know its not the same, but i once recieved an email from Lloyds (well I thought it was Lloyds) emailing about my internet banking etc saying i need to change my password as its been logged into from a different pc. anyway i done as the instructions told me (the links went directly to the site etc so i thought it was legit) anyway after recieveing regular emails i phoned lloyds and was told under no circumstances do they send emails, so it was basically a con to get me to re-type in all my details where a hacker oviously could see all this information. Could be a similar scam maybe?

Fair play for asking on here bud, but if you think about it, they know all of your bank details, address, sort code etc and all of the things they'd need to give you the refund, as they've already given you one iirc? definitely call them though, as even if it won't affect you ebcause you won't put your details in, they need to investigate something that would look that real that it would convince a lot of people.

I worked for HMRC and after getting taxed when I shouldnt have, I had an email from them a couple months after I left the job saying that i was due back 344.50 Whenever I tried to download the email content it kept coming up saying that it was a virus. Never got round to getting to the bottom of it though

This is a scam btw
as for your tax problem, phone HMRC and don't get off the phone until the sort it (probably by faxing / posting you and your employer a new copy of your correct tax code)
will also help if you have a rough idea of how much you are due back aswell.
if you need any help drop me a PM - I work in payroll and do tax calculations everyday
