It would seem that Sky and the BBC have new competition when it comes to airing live Football

And the company in question is... Apple! Never thought i'd read that but it looks like they're looking to buy exclusive rights to air Premier League football!

Is it now time to look into buying an AppleTV?

fuck apple tv.

it's not like you would need to have it to watch it anyway, not like sky have turned around to virgin and told them they cant have it, would never work like that.

It is "Exclusive rights" which means you WOULD have to have an Apple TV to watch it. Have you been living in a cave? Do you not realise just how much money Apple have compared to Sky?

*EDIT*

Sky are worth £12.3 Billion
Apple are worth £337 Billion

You do the maths...

Read about it last night. Can't see apple taking over the market tbh.

The premier league isn't just about the money paid for the fits but also the number of people watching it to keep sponsors happy.

Apple have no market share in reality.

The funny thing is that they said the same about the iPhone. They had no previous market share, no previous experience and no fan base.

Look what happened..

i could not give a fuck about how much money apple have.

i cant remember the exact term, but no one company can control a whole market because they have the money to do so..

so yes, i can say i will not need apple tv to watch SKYsports.

So they do exactly the same as Sky do with Setanta. Sky take all the big games and Setanta get the bottom of the barrel.

Nobody needs telling how big football is in the UK. I have no doubts that if a true fan needs an AppleTV to watch the football, they'll do it.

The iPhone wasn't based on purchasing the rights to something else though. It was a freshly launched product.

Sponsors investment in the game is crucial to its survival so it's imperative they are kept happy.

Apple tv has been by all accounts a flop, it's been around years and hasn't really taken off.

eh your missing the point, setanta didn't require an extra device to work, it was something everyone had! they just couldnt out bid sky.

Apple TV has barely even been launched in the UK yet. Lets face it, football is no longer about the game, its about money.

If Apple walked in with a stupid amount of money then the FA would accept. It's only the same as when Sky first came and purchased the rights to football.

Apple needs something big to get their TV into homes. If there is any one way of doing it, football rights are the way.

.

Apple tv barely launched.....You are joking right?

Look how long ago apple tv was launched (were now onto a different box).

When the premier league was first set up and sky got involved the situation was totally different to what it is now. 20 years ago the financial investment by outside sources was substantially smaller. the FA/epl wouldn't sell the rights if long term the investment would drop from a large reduction in the audience. You've agreed that the game is about money, which is why it is so important to keep a large audience to keep the sponsors on board.

do you know what apple tv actually is?

it's not like a television service, it's actually more like an expensive windows media player connected to the internet !!!!

they MAY offer games to buy individually, but they arent going to buy sky out right, definately not !

Ryan and jay are both right to be fair..

Yes, they rely on audience to create revenue, but then again, most of the money will come from supporters paying to go to the games, not people paying for sky sports, as sky will just pay a lump sum..

Which Apple could easily do.. It not been shown on Sky will not effect people actually going to the games to support their team, so there will be no loss on the audience side of things really, as Apple would be paying them more than Sky were in the 1st place, so they will be in pocket..

Mlawlan, you saying they cant take it away to something not everyone has.. Not everyone has sky, nor sky sports, so thats a pretty shitty argument..

The only people with a real complaint will be the viewers, but chances are, sooner or later, Apple will set up a channel on sky, you pay for the apple channel, apple win twice..

There are two types of audiences. The EPL being exported via TV internationally will always play a key part, especially when you look at the expanding market in say china/india. Sponsorship isnt just a factor of live audiences but also the volume connected to broadcasting/media coverage in general. Its crazy when you look at different figues, for example one of my main clients has a nice media pack calculating the 'value' of advertising from every time they are mentioned online/printed press etc.. This is why we see such high prices paid for kit sponsorship, players having branded boots etc...

Its alot more complicated than the simple XXXX fee to buy the rights when looking at commercial partners who are involved in the EPL.

the apple channel, not the actual box, i thought that was the whole point, you know, with him mentioning the apple box and all...

I will eat my own penis if this happens. The day Sky lose the EPL will be the end of days.

I can't see it taking on, that sentanta sports or w.e. it whats never did really when they tried it so appleTV as a box, or a channel on sky .. well i can't really see it working as no doubt people would probs have to pay out more money for it like sentanta or espn. Fair enoguh people mayu get rid of sky sports package for it but you get people who use sky sports for other sports such as cricket, rugby etc. so for that reason i can't see it catching on if it was to happen!
