Hello, i have an iphone 4 and have iso5 to use the personal hotspot. Im paying like £40 a month (for annoying reasons its normally like £50 by the time they've charged me for everything) But does this tethering cost if i used it for my ipad at work. I have full 3G signal but no 3G capability on the ipad :n:. Surely this wont incure any other charge? Im already paying out my arse for the sodding phone and network charge ect... anyone know much about this? Im on O2 btw.

tethering the ipad to the iphone wont cost extra.

it will only incur extra charges when you go over your data allowance...

Yeh thats what i initally thought but when i was looking it said "Additional usage charges may apply" so i got a bit worried dont want to be paying a massive bill. I think i have 500MB of internet i know they stopped unlimited for some stupid reason on O2 you'd think after having a 24 month contract on £40 a month they'd give it all to you! :wall:

I wanted to do exactly the same mate so I phoned O2 and they confirmed that I was able to tether at no extra cos :) I'd double check with O2 that you won't get charged just to be 100% that you get this with your tariff, it only takes a couple of mins and the calls free :)

I'm on 3 and Personal hotspot tethering is free and included, any of these companies that charge you extra are ripping you off,
3 also offer unlimited 3G and the speeds are pretty good, I get 3.5mb download and 1.7mb upload which is almost faster than my internet.

One other thing... Even if you go over your 500MB You won't get additional charges unless you buy more Internet yourself.. You'll just get really slow Internet :)

Be very carefull with Data with O2.

I had a huge problem with them, in that they kept telling me I was fine to use the internet/data as I had not reached my limit yet,500mb. Eventually 2 months down the line I got a bill for around just over £1000 of which £950 was internet usage for that month.

Luckily I requested copies of my conversations on CD and had proof of how I had been asking each week how much internet I had left to use, and they gave up hounding me.

It turned out I only used an extra 400mb or something like that but charged me around £2.50 per extra mb used. Which really pissed me off as I was paying for a 3 contract at the same time which gave me a few gbs to use for an extra £10 a month.

Their only excuse was that it took them two months to calculate how much data I was using!!! Bullshit!!! I know there are similar stories from most networks but after this I'd never even think about getting a contract with O2 in which I was going to use the phone as a modem or browsing a lot of mobile internet.

I'm very happy with 3 they give you completely unlimited internet with no fair usage policy at all. I'll be finishing my dongle contract asap and just using my mobile from then on.

Browsing, BBC iplayer etc, downloading songs, and mixes as I was DJing a lot at the time. I find it quite easy to use that much data in no time.

Now I usually use around 1-3gb/month on the phone, 10-15gb/month on my dongle, and a good 20-35gb/month at my parents house.

Yep that's phone sales for you, I used to work for Phones 4 U and seen it everyday.
It used to piss me off how some people would walk away with a top of the range handset foc, £200 cashback, plus an extra £30 for 3 months insurance for £40 a month. Then someone would come in and they would walk out with a shit phone, no cashback, no extra money for insurance, at the same £40 and possibly less usage for that £40, just because they didn't understand the contract deals or the way salesmen work!!!

This will have been before the new legisation and caps that o2 have brought in. I can guarantee you will not be charged for data now as they just slow your speeds if you dont want to purchase a top up.

As for the charges and ammount of data used you will have gone over the original 'fair usage alowance' and it will have been deemed as over the fair usage policy which was credited back as a good will gesture.

Yes this was a few years ago now. I'm glad they've done something about it now.

Yes I did go over their 'fair usage policy' which was the 500mb limit. To me though with a 'fair usage policy' or not 500mb is not and should not have been advertised as unlimited.

More so, they should have been able to tell me exactly how much I've used instantly not 2 months later, or at least trained their call handlers to pass this information on to the customer instead of saying "You've hardly touched it keep using it as much as you want!" especially if their version of unlimited was 500mb.
