If it was done properly and it was a rent-a-room then yes as it's a lodger, and if found in the right place won't be at yours on the weekend. Plus doing it that way you get all personal details and work info so fairly safe

We do. Its just me, my older brother and a lad my brother knows in our house/my mums house. She lives in Scotland, so we have a few rooms we can rent out. pays for my living anyway :D
its not too bad really, I knew him beforehand a bit. And we all get along pretty well when we see eachother. we all work at different times, so you get the house to yourself quite alot here.

boy at my work rented his spare room out and this odd scandinavian girl moved in, she used to walk into his room naked at silly o'clock and just steal his cigs then walk out again!

Id just be stood in said room, also naked, with a hardon, then "fight her for the cigarettes".

I rent a spare room off a guy from work and so does another guy from work (huge house).
Works well for us, we pay £700pm between us so effectively pays for his mortgage.
We work together and have done for 5 years +.
I used to share a house with another guy from work, was good until he got a doris. She moved in (paid a third) but was so awkward, who wants to sit in the living room watching tv with a couple on the other couch?

the people who are saying no, do you own a house to rent out? just wondering, cos my mortgage is 550 a month, total out goings are 900 odd, i get 350 a month in on rent, i could afford to live by myself, but it certainly helps me out, think you would be daft to just dismiss it

Nope, but the thread said If you had/have a flat would you rent your spare room?
I can imagine the income does help a bit but I'm too much of a loner to do it.

like my own space, i dont really like sharing. luckily enough i can afford without sharing.
Did think about sharing with a friend years ago, however i thought it would end badly.

My parents just had some danish lass renting a room at our house for like 4 months before xmas. She was on some teacher training thing at my mums school so it wasn't as if she was a total stranger, and she was hardly ever here on weekends. The house is big enough so it didn't really bother me.
I wouldn't rent out to a random stranger i don't think.

Yes I have a mortgage to pay, and a spare room, and I wouldn't rent that room out unless I was absolutely strapped for cash
I bought my own flat for a reason, furnished it myself, don't want somebody else using and abusing my stuff, a girlfriend is different, but not a lodger

Totally agree withthis. My house is perfectly sized for me and me alone. WIth someone else here permanantly it would probably feel cramped. Maybe different if a girlfriend moved in , but not just any one and deffinately not a complete stranger. The extra rent money would certainly come in handy, but at present, i'm not desperate for it.
Only exception would be if a mate was desperate for somewhere to crash, as long as it was only short term

If it was someone i knew and trusted, then i don't see why not.. If it was just a randomer, id be more reluctant to do it, just because i don't like people going through any of my things

i have a flat
and i dont rent the spare room
its used as a spare, full of bits and bobs that need a place to be stored
plus its handy if you're on a night out and your mate needs a place to stay etc

If i didn't live with my girlfriend then it would be a strong possibility, But we don't need to extra money and its somewhere for her to go when she pisses me off
If i lived by myself then yes i would seriously think about, maybe not in the size flat i have atm, but if i had a house would think about it

My mum and dad do, they rent two rooms out infact. Although they've got a shared bathroom and kitchen so they're separate to my parents really, my parents just stay downstairs. They don't pay much really. Always random people from work or from putting adds in the paper etc. they've got sky in each room and they're not bad sizes :)
But personally I wouldn't here. I could never share with anyone else, I even get annoyed living with the bf haha. But I've got a baby so it might be different.

I've rented a room out twice when I was living in the midlands.
I'd do it again if I lived on my own.
The first time I rented the room out. The lad turned out to be a proper lazy bastard and bit of a weird one at that and I had to ask him to leave after a few months.
I found myself turning into my mum and leaving post it notes everywhere eg. one on the toilet saying "When you've finished flush the toilet", one on the toilet roll holder saying "when you've finished the roll please replace it", one on the sink saying "when you've used some crockery wash it". etc, until my house was littered with post it notes all over.
I hated this experience but tried again, and rented the room out to a lad who worked for me. This time I was much happier and me and the lad I was renting to are still really good mates.
I rented out 1 room with all bills covered, and his rent covered the entire rent on the house so all I had to do was pay the bills. It stated in my tenancy agreement that I could not sublet, however I spoke to my landlord and he was quite happy for me to do this.
My only advice would be to try and rent to someone you know or can get a good reference from, as it is a nightmare living with someone who does your head in!!!

its always difficult to share a house/room with someone you work with, you end up being with that person 24/7 - you wake up in the same house, get ready at the same time, drive to work together, spend all day working with each other, come home in the evening and you're both in the house together all night
one fall out could seriously ruin a friendship

It does have it's disadvantages, but for me and my mate it was fine we did have a couple of arguments/fights but they were due to alcohol, and not the fact we were living together and we were both mature enough not to let it affect our work relationship. I suppose it depends on the work and the hours aswell, I managed a restaurant at the time, so there were all sorts of shift patterns.
Now having a relationship and living with someone you work with I'd never do again.
Me and my ex-fiancee used to work in France together, then came back to England and worked at Chicargo Rock Cafe together. This went well and truly tits up and I ended up fighting one of the doormen after a jealous argument got a bit heated after work.

yeah, the thing is though i've had arguments with my missus and wanted to be like "fuck you then!" and then storm out and leave her until things cool off - but the problem is i live with her, so i'm like "fuck you then!" and i try and make a dramatic exit only to go sit in the spare room on my own
OP, another reason not to rent the spare room ;) if you have an argument with your other half you can confide in there for a few hours :y:
