View Full Version : Tapping noise

I have searched but cant really find anything to help my problem
Basically i can hear a tapping noise from the engine but only when i have driven for a while and its idling (it could be doing it while i drive but i cant hear it)
I have changed the oil last month and its still up to the max mark, spark plugs have been changed today so they are all tight.
Im not sure what it is because its not constantly doing it from start up just as said above when warm :/
Anybody any ideas?

My guess would be your tappets mate 8v's are prone to it :)

but would the noise come and go with tappets?

As the car gets warm the oil thins out, making it tap.

i know all garages are different but how much do you think it would cost to do?
Cam
11th January 2012, 23:46
Its only a 20 min job so about £30? But some garages may try charge you for a new rocker cover gasket.
tyler1400
11th January 2012, 23:48
If you remove the rocker cover is it not best to replace the gasket tho?
Cam
11th January 2012, 23:58
Not always you can normally get away with it, only trying to save you money...
tyler1400
12th January 2012, 00:00
i appreciate that but i dont want it to make more problems by trying to save a tenner :)

If the gasket leaks after taking the rocker cover off, then just replace it yourself, it's only 2x8mm bolts holding it on, just don't do them up too tight, they are easy to snap...and watch out for the two spacers underneath, don't let them fall in to the engine...

Good plan, might even give the tappets a go myself :)

It is easy to do yourself if you're mechanically minded,
My furio use to tap like crazy :) did it myself was 20 inlet 40 exhaust i think.. those numbers ring a bell anyway!.. all sorted now didnt have to change the gasket on it because it isnt a stupid bit of paper that breaks its a big bit of rubber, your choice though i guess.. :)

do you have to put it in third gear or something?
Cam

Third gear for what? Lol...
tyler1400
12th January 2012, 23:19
sure i read jack the car up put it in third and turn the wheel when adjusting the tappets?
maybe this is something else and im lost

I used this guide (http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68216) when doing mine
Nice and quiet now

TDC = Top Dead Centre...basically means when you're watching the tappet you want to adjust, you stop turning the engine when the tappet stops rising, if you miss it, just turn the engine back the other way, you'll notice the tappets rise and then "hover" before falling again, you want to adjust them when they are "hovering"
tyler1400
12th January 2012, 23:54
How do you adjust it, spanner? socket? torx?
DreamEater
12th January 2012, 23:56
Spanner to un do the bottom nut, then a socket to adjust the top bolt which is the tappet, the lower nut is then tightened up to stop the tappet working loose.
When I adjusted mine I did them up really tight to the feeler guage so I had to yank the guage out from the tappet, as it does want to be 0.20 and not 0.25 etc.

Right say as you look at the car, from left to right what gap has to be there?

Left to right
Inlet 1 2 3 4
Exhaust 1 2 3 4
Right instead of asking what the tapping noise is i know its my tappets. Searched the threads and found this:
adjusting the tapets is easy so get outside and do it yourself, put the car in 3rd gear and jack the car up on one side at the front, then remove the rocker cover and spark plugs so u dont have to work against the compression. next turn the front wheel thats raised off the floor in a forward direction to turn the engine over to the correct position and adjust the valves to the following specs using a feeler gauge:
valve clearances are- 0.20mm for all the inlet valves and 0.40mm for the exhaust valves
No.1 exaust valve fully open - adjust No.3 inlet and No.4 exhaust.
No.3 exhaust vale fully open - adjust No4 inlet and No2 exhaust.
No4 exhaust open- adjust No2 inlet and No1 exhaust.
No2 exhaust open - adjust No1 inlet and No3 exhaust.

He is talking about when you turn the engine over, you jack up one wheel and put it in fifth.. then you can turn the engine over by turning the wheel :)

How do i know whats inlet and exhaust?
i dont mean to be rude, but it sounds like you have not got a clue what to do here. what you are about to adjust is crucial to the engine performance, and doing it wrong could put it in worse shape than it is. if I have time today before I go to uni. I will look through the haynes manual and scan the page for you. i doubt i will have time, as i have an assignment to submit, a 4 hour lecture, followed by work. so it will most likely be some time tonight 22:00 ish..

I don't mean this horribly but if you are struggling this much I would suggest taking it to a garage. Anyway, if you take off the rocker cover, and look from above, inlet is at the back of the head and exhaust is at the front of the head.

Well i managed to change the axle on my old 106 and bleed the brakes up and i never tryed anything like that before so i should be able to do it....i just like to know exactly what to do mate :-)

yea if you could scan it that would be great, and as above for not having a clue....ijust like to know everything before i start it

Before you ruin your engine, I can almost bank on it being a leaky exhaust manifold gasket or downpipe join.
Check these areas first before you start poking around with the tappets.
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 09:27
How would a that make a tapping noise? and i have listened to the engine when this noise happens and its coming from the block
holdawayt
13th January 2012, 09:30
I'm not going to sit here and explain how an engine works, so don't question my knowledge. But a leaky manifold gasket causes a ticking noise.
8v's do tend to be noisy engines though. Take it to a garage would be my advice.
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 09:38
I was asking for a simple answer because with my limited knowledge i dont see how that would cause a ticking noise, therefore if you shared your wisdom it could help me in future.
and i know 8v are loud engines but mines actually not loud at all (saxova will agree) but i never changed a cambelt or serviced a car untill 2 months ago, i did it by following guides and.my car is still running spot on

Is the noise most noticeable when cold and at low rpms when under load? Does the noise go away once the car is warm? If so, look at the exhaust.
I see where you're coming from, I only know what I know because of Haynes manuals and getting stuck in myself. Seriously, if you don't already have one - go and get one from a motor factors. You'll probably have to adjust tappets on loads of cars when you're older so it's a good idea to learn now!
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 09:49
Thats what im thinking its on a shitron, simple engines best to learn on in my eyes
when i did my cam belt i didnt have a clue what people were talking about when they explained it to me but as soob as i started i understood
and no the ticking noise only happens when i have been driving for a while (engine warm) and i can only hear it idling, but it could be doing it while driving but i cant hear it

Dude.. this is the tightest/smoothest 8v i've heard running! Especially as it's on 130k!
Tappet's are fine!
The ticking i could hear when it was running on my front, was the injectors.. perfectly normal!
:y::y:
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 10:13
Ohhh i thought if it was injectors it would make the noise all the time? Not come and go as the engine warms up
saxova
13th January 2012, 10:14
I could hear them all the time :P
Put a video up, i'm sure people will agree it's a quiet 8v! :y:
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 10:18
I will do just at work now, i only heard it while i was i the car....and its only.started over the last few.month......
will the car still run fine or will it fuck up because of the injectors at some point?
saxova
13th January 2012, 10:22
It'll be fine, you worry too much :P
My 8v didn't sound that healthy on 64k, and that was perfectly fine untill 98k when i took it out!

My old Vtr sounded like a box of nails mate. And that was after I checked almost everything over and it was fine. They're noisy little bastards so I wouldn't worry about it.

I will put a video up later :-) thanks all for the help anyway

tyler1400

Haha! i like a loud deep noise tho, yours is more like a bee..... buzzing around ;-)
saxova
13th January 2012, 11:47
You'll change your taste one day :P
After 10000's of miles with BWAMMMMMM at hardly any revs it starts getting annoying :)
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 12:04
Mines actually nornal inside the car at low revs...only makes a noise after 3k revs ;-)
saxova
13th January 2012, 12:20
Didn't realise you had a backbox lol
De-cat your car and see if you can still bare the jap cans :P
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 12:49
See its normal untill you open the engine up, and pointless in getting rid of cat now with these stupid new mot rules
saxova
13th January 2012, 12:52
Fuck the MOT.
It's always been against the law to not have a cat - well to pass a emission's test. But 90% of people who de-cat their car don't get a 'MOT friendly map'
So it's no different :P
tyler1400
13th January 2012, 12:57
All the mot places in bburn are cunts, they do everything by the book (its good i guess) might get a sports cat so at least it will actually pass
saxova
13th January 2012, 12:59
365 day's in a year.
Mot for 1 of those days, takes a hour max to put a CAT on.
I know what i'd do :)

13th January 2012, 18:22
I guess, was going to get a video but it decided not to make the noise ha
