No he was wrong.

It'll only fail if you don't have a cat when you should.

No at the moment you don't need one as long as you pass emmisisons, they're making them compulsive.

This is a fairly good bit of info...

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/car-servicing-repair/mot-changes-2012.html

I also think that it is the way the tester interprets the new regs....

depends how much of a cunt the tester is i suppose.
I always get the impression that generally the older testers dont really like it when you start modifying things like exhausts and suspension and usually seem a bit rude as though you've done something wrong...
Some testers will fail for being too loud. My car has a 4inch peco with a decat and is very loud yet doesnt seem to bother my mot tester at all.

Theres always been a decibel limit which police can catch you out on (depending on how strict they are round your way)

I also wouldnt mind knowing what the actual rule is, as i want to put an underfloor cat on my 52 plate vtr with 421 mani so its easy mot-time. havent they got to be type approved for newer cars?

Nosie limit is usually the testers discretion i think. The car that was on the ramps before mine at my local garage was too loud...only reason being that the tool hire shop next door came in and told them to stop because it was making their walls vibrate and making the equipment vibrate against it which was pissing them off. Tester decided it was too loug because of the complaint and had to fail it. Mine wasn't much quieter but he let it pass as nobody came in and yelled at him :homme:
