Old Game

Can anyone remember a game, I'm sure it was DOS based. You would type text commands and it would tell you whether you could continue or not. Commands such as go left, it would then say, you are confronted with a door, do you wish to open or turn back.
Something like that I'm sure.

Red alert?

Wasn't red alert an actual game with little machines that transformed and shot people etc.
This was text only no visual.
