So I moved out of my mums and into an apartment in October 2011 and haven't had the internet there all this time. I think it's time to make a decision and finally get it up and running.

My question is who's got the best deal at the moment? I've seen plusnet doing a 60gb a month internet for £25 per month. Is 60gb going to be enough if we use the internet for xbox live say 2 hours a night? A couple of music downloads, youtube videos etc?

Or if you know of any others let me know.

Thanks :y:

Just get the sky package: you get tv, phone and internet for a decentish price.

Virgin cable is one of the best you can get but most modern apartments can't get it :(

+1 skys the cheapest for us. We pay £62 for Internet, landline, line rental and sky with movies, music and kids channels! Everything but sports basically
Sky themselves are utterly shite but they did work out cheaper Grr.

Thats what I've got but mine is £20 per month. I rarely go above 40gb plus from midnight to 8am it's totally unlimited. So more than enough really.
Plus they are a good service, I think my connection has dropped maybe twice for no longer than 1 minute in the 8 months I've been with them.

That Plusnet package sounds dead expensive for a data limited broadband deal :n:
Use google / money super market ect. You can get exclusive web deals that way.

For a internet only, not tv, phone etc. That deal of 60gb per month with 12am-8am unlimited is one of the best deals out there.

Sky and Virgin offer unlimited but only if you have their tv combo bollocks. I asked Sky for BB only and they said something like £35 per month.

Ahh Didn't know that, I don't really pay attention to internet / TV adverts enough to read the small prints etc :geek:.
Disregard my previous post

Don't know what the price is as I get it for free, but BT is advertised as unlimited but capped at 300gb a month (fair usage policy) if you go over they cap at 1mb at peak times.

add the age of the captain then divide by the length of a piece of string iirc

tip: a sky package is cheaper then you get phone + tv on top of it.

Sky unlimited for £17 a month and get 10/mb sec

'Upto 10megabit per month'

Unless you live next to the exchange then you are not going to get the maximum speed.

Just an update for anyone thats interested, went with Sky, £10 one off charge to set up our telephone line. Then its £12.25 for 6 months (as the internet is free so only pay line rental) then its £22.25 for another 6 months for unlimited broadband and telephone. Including free router and installation. Not bad I dont think.

For real? I get lag on virgin even when nobody else is using the connection let alone another xbox and a PC!

Nah man I bought Sky BB yesterday, I think it was £12.25 (line rental, the BB is free for 6 months) a month for 6 months then £22.25 after that, and it's unlimited.

I'd go for sky if you can't get Virgin. The 100mb Virgin is rather expensive anyway.

nice one going with sky, packages are one of the best around at the moment for sticking to the "unlimited" service.

Depends on your area and how overloaded the network is, which is why there idea of doubling speeds is such a stupid move when there network already has issues :(.

They're not doubling the speed without upgrading the network, it's scheduled to be complete by 2013.

Think they said something about a £20 connection charge, then something about deducting it from your first bill? Not really sure was to busy football bantering the lad on the other end of the phone and didn't listen. Not bothered anyway cause I know how much BT charge for connection.. if you miss the engineer though it costs ya £120 or something! :D. Heard that part!

I don't really wanna start a new thread. But when people have just had sky broadband set up, is it meant to be intermittent while they test it? I know they give you a slower speed at first but mine keeps going on and off, which I don't remember happening last time. I'm not sure if it's normal or not. All the lights on the router seem fine but my laptop which was previously connected fine at the old house won't load any pages, same for the iPad and phones.

IIRC ADSL providers statically set your IP profile at 2 megabits for the first 10 days to monitor what speed the line can support without dropping packets and then raise the profile to match this speed.....fairly certain this is/was the case.

Ahhh that's what I thought. Would this give me problems connecting to the Internet completely though? It was intermittent but now I haven't been able to load anything for 2 hours but the laptop says its connected.
I hate sky :(

That's what they told me yesterday. That they would 'monitor' the line for 10 days to establish the fastest stable connection speed.

It's not set specifically to 2mbps but throughout the first 10 days the broadband will be going through an SNR reset to confirm the maximum stable rate for the line.

It shouldn't be intermittent, just the speeds should flux however getting your ISP to raise a fault within the first 10 days can be tricky as they will advise of the 'stabilisation' period that I mentioned above :y:

Oh and don't turn your router on/off you will eventually cause a profile drop and get poor speeds.

op DONT get sky...

i cant stress this enough, i moved into a new flat roughly 5 months ago and bought the tv/internet/phone package from sky. its still not setup. its been 5 months, we have sky tv - dont get me wrong but its not worth it. here's why:

sky fucked up the appointments 3 times, i've had days off work to wait for them and they never showed, they just sent me a text saying the appointment was cancled then tried to charge me £105

the TV signal is shit, obviously thats my area, but just adding that

internet is slow (for the time we had it until they had to take it off us to sort it out again)

i keep getting charged for things i've not done, which results in me spending hours on the phone getting the money back

customer service is shit, i've been promised free channels, free movies etc because of the shit service i've recieved but never got it

spent literally hours being passed from department to department to try and sort things out with them

argued with managers about why i'm paying £30 a month for the complete package when i'm only recieving TV, only to be told i've entered a contract and i'm now out of my cooling off period and so i'm legally tied to keep paying

i've now dedicated my life to shortening skys business

also - talktalk is cheapest at the moment mate :y: go with them

.

Ahhh makes sense, I remember it was something like that when I had ADSL back in the day.

I had to call the middle east and get them to raise the IP profile as mine did seemed to be capped at 2mb for a month and it took 40 minutes of me explaining to the guy what an IP profile is.......

so they say, they've been "upgrading" the network consistently over the past couple of years, they'd be better off sorting out all the network issues they have so people can have a decent service before they start running about increasing line speeds.

people moan about virgins network issues when in fact the customers are mostly to blame they say ' our internet keeps going off blah blah' turns out they have been doing some gardening and cut there cable yet they still insist it wasnt them cant understand why they do this:S or they have used there own equipment basically customers do something that then causes problems but will not tell the engineer

oh no no no saxwesty, they're not engineers,
they're jumped up technicians at very very best.

the term engineer gets thrown around too much, you need to have a degree, and be accredited by a professional body in order to be an engineer.

I have no idea what you're on about but you're clearly angry about something I don't even know if you're on cable or adsl... The upgrade work for when everyones packages is estimated to be complete by 2013 obviously this only affects cabled areas.

Sorry, but they are BT Openreach engineers.

the WLR ones yeah it's debatable they're basically techs but the broadband SFI's I book are all engineers although half the time they pretend to have called the customer and just move onto the next job.

yeah, they're called engineers by sky, or virgin, or some other shitarse company, but they're not really engineers are they? what do they know about engineering? all they know, is how to fit a sky box into a tv, and tune the tv in so it works, most 14 year olds could do that nowadays

but dont take my word for it, make it official, apply to the institute of engineering technology to get IET EngTech, (thats the lowest form of professional registration) - i guarantee that if you pretended to be a sky engineer and applied for accreditation they'd laugh you straight out the door...
