anyone had a letter to warn them to stop ? Just wondered cause at the moment I'm with virgin. Never had any warning or problem downloading the odd torrent file. However, due to sky being cheaper i was thinking of switching over. But to anyone with sky, are the speeds constant, any downtime and do they ever complain about torrent downloaders ? Cheers peeps.

I don't think you're gonna get a faster speed with Sky.. And yeah I've received letters, not directly from Sky I don't think (might be as well), but from an independent company who obviously Sky released my details to.

I just thought I would clear this up, downloading torrents is NOT against the law. Its the actual sharing of the file that is illegal, you can download it, just don't share it.

i believe Thats incorrect mate i think i heard this being a myth although I'm not sure 100 per cent. I know sharing is illegal but you Cant download on my bit torrent without uploading at least a bit Can you ?

Dont talk nonsense. If the file you are downloading is copyrighted and you are not paying for it then of course its illegal.
If you steal a bag of crisps from a shop, its illegal and its still illegal if you share them with your friends.

Nah he's right mate, utorrent for example is legal, the clients for file sharing are always legal, it's just the content transmitted over it. And yeah uploading copyright stuff which you have to do as you download it is illegal.. Of course if you were worried about that you could just use http downloads.. megaupload etc.. There's like, the chances of getting caught downloading from that are almost incomprehensible.

i dont think i download enough to be done for anything judging by some of the responses. I dont do Nothing like 10gig in a month. Just the odd film to watch. As for it being illegal, I'm sure it is. Havent they been making examples out of people in the states for downloading stuff. I appreciate What your saying about the actual client is not illegal but breaching a copy right is illegal and downloading stuff such as films breaches the film copy right , for the fact the films been copied in the first place and you've obtained it with out paying a dime.

I agree, the clients for sharing are totally legal. However the dude was saying you can download what you want, just as long as you dont share it. At least thats how i read it.

Who care's, pc plods not going to turn up with a search warrant on your computer is he? be realistic everyone downloads music, videos and games whether its on a legal service or not it doesn't matter and not everyone is going to be told off for it. It's only 'illegal' if you share pirate stuff that's not sold before release date.

That is infact true, which is why I use a different place to download my torrents, I would post the name but not sure if I would be allowed. The torrent I use doesn't upload whilst downloading.
What you will find with different torrent sites such as priatebay, torrentz, btjunkie etc... is as you are downloading the torrent you will have a download speed and an upload speed, that IS illegal because you are sharing the file.
If you subscribe to a hosted server where the torrents aren't copyright infringed but are in fact paid for to be downloaded by subscribing members then you are NOT breaking the law.
I pay £3.99 a month to the one that I use and I have just downloaded my 27th title of the month. Never ever received a warning letter
Scott

There is now way around it. Downloading copyrighted files is illegal. Regardless of sharing.
You are kidding yourself if you think because you pay £3.99 a month for a restricted/membership torrent to download that you are not doing anything illegal.

Show me which of any of the major music/movies labels that are signed up to sharing their material via torrents?
BTW i couldnt care less that your downloading stuff it doesnt hurt me. However thinking that you are doing it illegally is wrong.

I think the intention is Illegal not necessarily(sp?) the action, not being a smart alec but it's a very grey area. As long as your not in breach of the (DMCA) Digital Millennium Copyright Act, then you should be fine.
If I'm being completely open with you, it's not necessarily(sp?) the file you download but the way you download it. I could go on to any torrent site and download a movie trailer, simply because it isn't copyrighted.
Anything that can be sold and made profit of is copyrighted, which I appreciate totally undermines my previous posts, but from a server you are a lot less likely to get caught simply because your IP address is masked.
If you receive another letter, I advise the following.
On your desktop, start-->cmd-->ipconfig /all. Then get your default gateway, post that into your browser and login to your router, remove your wireless password and act dumb.
In a court of law, on an open connection, there is no proof it was in fact you downloading it.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but:
Sky are awesome... Fact!
Unlimited id the one to get. Don't worry if you don't get the full 20meg speed. I never get more than 7meg! I still pay for it and don't care.
Sky don't throttle at peak times and don't operate a fair useage policy. This alone is worth the small fee they charge.
I have also never had issues with connectivity as most of their maintenance is done at night.
Thats my opinion anyway.
Others may have had differing experiances.

He already gets 10Mbit/s with Virgin. He'll be worse of speed wise.. I'm almost certain sky won't give him faster speeds. The advantage/trade off being he could get a (basically) unlimited download limit if that's what he needs.. Sky are one of the last companies that do that. I don't know if Virgin cap? Or if he needs unlimited? I wouldn't say they are awesome though! I mean, the actual internet has only ever gone down once or twice in 5 years for me, but their customer service isn't good at all.. Then again no big companies is, is it? They also do have a fair usage policy matey, but it's only if you're torrenting at peak times.

Well, put it this way.
I download a bit and never have issues.
Yes you get better speeds with virgin due to the fibre optic cables.
Even if you game online 2 meg is fast enough.
Sky may have a fair usage policy (i havent checked for a while) bit theu don't enforce it ( I would have had letters otherwise)
Sky's customer care is better than virgins - i was a virgin customer for 2 years and had constant disputes with them.
Sky is much cheaper and at least when they say you need to pay line rental it because you do, unlike virgin where if you get the vt you don't pay line rental, yet add broardband to your packages and you have to pay line rental for the line that is already there to send your tv pictures?
Again, this is my opinion and i'm sure people will dissagree. I personally think sky give a better service and package for the money you spend per month.

Been with sky for years, hardly ever a problem and when there is the customer service centre is very helpful. I'd chose those over anyone.

Im with sky and download at least a film a day from a site i was invited to and make donations too, Yes it is illegal, They all are. Never had any problems though. I run an IP blocker mind, Not sure if this stops sky from seeing what im doing though.

Just pay for an encrypted private VPN tunnel and force all your internet traffic through that.
That's what I do, like a tenner a month and the ISP can see nothing except the amount of data you have used, they have no ability to see it's content. Means I don't get spammed to fuck by the ISP or anyone else.

Virgin Media have the fastest internet service out of the major players. We have both a Sky stall and Virgin stall in our shopping center and Sky openly admit it.

I'm with Sky and getting a constant 14mb down but my Sister only lives about 200m from me and gets 19mb. I am always downloading torrents pretty much 24/7 and have never received a warning letter. £17 a month for phone and completely unlimited BB is great tbh.

Downloading via http is just as bad. Torrents are spread about different sources and downloads in pieces so its quicker and more reliable, plus as far as your isp is concerned youre connecting to random pcs, although a few monitor and throttle torrent traffic but theres less chance unless they sniff packets and see what exactly is being downloadex which, afaik, is a pretty grey area.

Sky you never tend to get the 20mb/s where as Virgin you will always get the 10mb/s normally around 9.6+ and Virgin are doubling everyones speed for free soon. Check out the link www.virginmedia.com/doublespeed with a max speed of 120mb/s, I would stick with Virgin. With regards to the upload speed why not change it to 0 in the settings so you never upload?
