Hey, i'm finding it really difficult to change into 5th gear and reverse, i've been told I don't need a new gearbox.. But um.. That's it.
Any ideas what the problem is?

probably a combination of worn gear linkages and gear selector arm pin thing.
theres a thread on here about all the possibilities somewhere.
just have a search you will find it eventualy :y:

clutch or as above gear linkages

Every other gear is fine to get into, so I doubt it's the clutch, but it grinds and goes crazy when I try to put it in reverse :/ ugh! Also how much would it be to fix? Loll

reverse is always dodgy on lots of cars that aren't new lol if i wos u just maybe change the gear box oil and just be delicate changing gears :) no need to fix until it's broke lol

Haha, I don't do delicate, if it doesn't go in first time I practically yank it about til it cries.. Which probably doesn't help.. lol

I dont have a clue, sorry. I only know it could be the clutch because the same thing has happened to loads of my familys cars :n: lol

Ahhh :n: Get someone to make sure it definatly is before replacing it though, otherwise you could be waisting your money :n:

Yeah, unfortunately the extent of my knowledge finishes at shock absorbers and brake pads and discs.. So I guess i'll have to take it to someone who knows a little more than me haha.
I've already had to change the rear shock absorbers, brake lights, reverse light, now perhaps my clutch is fucked and by the looks of it I may need a new gearstick..
Remind me never to go to auctions and get a car ever again.

Oh and I forgot about thermostats. But that's it haha.
To be fair, mine is just luck, I take stuff apart and hope for the best!
Oh and I helped build a kit car cobra with my dad, that helped a bit too!

1 trick I've found that work's is..
If it's struggling to go into reverse, Leave in neutral.. let clutch out.. press it again, try to put it in reverse..
If that doesn't work, i slowly release the clutch while trying to put it in reverse.. and it'll slip in.

i've only had the car 3 days haha!
lean to drive the thing and always put your foot way down on the clutch when reversing. Neutral, clutch down, clutch up then clutch down and engage R
If that doesn't work, i slowly release the clutch while trying to put it in reverse.. and it'll slip in.
this. gears are usually harder from cold during winter anyway.

Mine was a swine to get into gear, found the bolt holding the rod to the bottom of the lever was loose, tightened it and it's a lot better. Still some play so a new rod and control arm/ball are on the wish list.

You trying to engage first whilst on the move? If so that'll be why.

to double check if the clutch is on its way out,
park on flat level ground and apply the handbrake
engage 1st gear and try to drive off.
if the car stalls or the front wheels spin and drag the arse along then the clutch is fine.
if it just revs then your clutch needs replacing :y:

Probably the cold weather, guarantee after the car has run for 20 mins the problem is not there.

clutch or as above gear linkages
I can't see it being the clutch tbh as it changesInto other gears fine and sets off fine and has no whining noise?
I'd guess gear linkages need replacing.
As 5th gear is usually easiest in my cars to change into, 1st/reverse can be a pain sometimes on my vtr.
