To sum it up BCAA's are (Branched Chain Amino Acids)..

The body doesn't produce these so if supplemented you have the advantage of increased protein synthesis.

If you want a pre-workout supplement then I recommend MusclePharm Assualt. Only pre-workout I've used apart from gaspari size on which was pretty crap. It's really good stuff, good pumps, strength and energy without the crash. About £27 for a tub which will last around 4 weeks, cycles 8 weeks on and 2 weeks off

most people use creatine, its best in powder form and mixed with a protein shake tbh rather than tablets

look at ur diet more than towards supplements, if u havent gained any weight ur simpley not eating enough calories. Eat every 3 hours see meals as fuel for your body, not when your hungry. You can get most the stuff you get in supplements from a good blanced diet. Try it for a month train 4-5 times a week no longer than about 1 hour a day and you should see some gains.

I have seen some good gains ^^ but like you say i need to look at my diet but what i am after is a supplement that is a step up from the regular protein powders. As in the body building warehouse stuff i constantly get emails about. they are always sellin mad tabs so people must be buyin them.

The body doesn't produce these so if supplemented you have the advantage of increased protein synthesis.

You have 20 BCAA's in total, 8 essential and 12 non essential. Your 8 essential BCAA's come from your protein intake, so if your gettin enough meat and protein shakes in your diet then BCAA's are not really needed. The other 12 BCAA's are not needed for protein synthesis.

If your looking to put on weight mate you clearly need to increase your intake of calories. Do you know your current daily percentage of carbs, fats and protein?

Wrong. There are 3 branched chain amino acids, Valine, Leucine, and Iso-leucine.

Protein is made up of 22 not 20, amino acids iirc, 8 being essential as the body cannot produce them, 12 not essential.

Taking them as a supplement is a much more practical way to get the best out of them unless you are eating stupid amounts of protein.
When you train your muscles are depleted of BCAA's so by taking them before and after training will only help your performance, recovery and muscle gain..

I wish you would stop givin the op bad advice. Its not wrong. There are 20 amino acids, where does the 3 come from??!!! You cannot produce the 8 essential in your body(as i said) the 12 non essential can be produced in the body but are not needed for protein synthesis. This is fact!!Also 12 + 8 = 20 not 22

There are 5 other essential amino acids you failed to mention ;)

No they are 3. They are called 'branch chain' because of there molecular structures. And theres 9 essiantial, if I remember correctly.

If you bothered to read instead of just copying from google and then making out that it's you own knowledge, you would see there are 3 BRANCHED CHAIN AMINO ACIDS not 20... We are not talking about amino acids in general within protein. We are talking about BCAA that make up 30% of amino acids in any protein.

In terms of taking these bcaa's they recommend 3-5 tablets 2-4 times a day...so thats upto 20 in a day.....seems excessive. How many would you recommend taking per day?

McGuire86

If you eat enough quality protein you wont need to suppliment BCAA's throughout the day. Just in and around your workout. I have 20g each workout, so thats why I use the powder.

What do you mix the powder with mate?

When I was taking it, it literally mixed with nothing I tried, and tasted like shit with everything... Only way I could manage it was spooning it in my mouth then drinking, but the taste was soooooo bad

Yup I have this very problem. The batch I had from MP before seemed to mix much better. Most of this just sits on the top now.

I just mix it with my pre workout before (jack3d etc with water), workout drink (water, vit c, l glut, waxy maize) and pwo (whey protein, l glut, waxy maize)

Find myself chewing on little lumps of the stuff ha.

Blerghhhhhhhhh. I actually found it seemed OK with milk, I just remembered, but still not great.

Only advice I can give it try leaving it for 20mins before drinking. It does absorb into the water, just takes forever. Might try a diff BCAA from MP next.
