View Full Version : Random money in my account..

What would you do?
I've randomly been given a few hundred from somewhere into an account I don't really use anymore.
It just says 'bank giro credit' there's no reference and the bank have no way of tracing it, or sending it back. The advisor said he can move it somewhere else for me if it's not mine, but just incase it is meant for me I said no its fine lol
How long would you leave it to see it as yours and not a mistake?
I feel bad incase it's someone's pay that they're waiting for but as they've not put a reference I don't know whose it could be?!
I guess I could put it in savings, get a bit of interest and if it is called back least I have it to give them back plus a few extra pound for myself aha.

I would take it out instantly and either transfer it to your normal account or spend it on something nice.

If you don't need it for anything then just stick it in a savings account for a few months and then spend it if you hear nothing back.
If it's someone elses money then im sure you will find out quick enough!

I would keep it, but then again it could come back to bite you, so i would put it in savings like you said, if you havent heard anything within a few months, then spend it :y:

"bank giro credit" is just a means of transfering money
like "direct debit"
someone or some company has credited you with money for whatever reason

Lob it in your savings for a month and if you don't hear anything, spend it on booze and hookers.

I'd leave it a long time to be fair. My mate was mistakenly deposited £800, he left it a month then put it towards a new car.
Roughly 8 months later they realised their mistake and asked for the money back, to which he refused and they told him that, if he had spent the money and could not pay it back, or simply refused they would have him arrested for theft. I'm not sure how sure how successful they would have been in recovering it after 8 months but who knows. He paid it back as soon as they threatened to go to the police.

If its not your money, and you spend it, they can claim it back.
Transfer it to your mum (preferably with another bank)
I'd probably transfer 240 (rent) on the 25th, then again on the 2nd, so it looks like im just paying rent like i'd done since i was 17
EDIT:
Law-wise its theirs

Your mate is a fool, Im sure that after 6 months if no one has come forward then it belongs to you, May be wrong.

I dont understand how he could be 'done for theft' as technically he was given the money

Where did you learn that because they made a mistake you don't have to pay them back, because it's not true... Pretty sure if they realised, you could be done for theft...

here have something... ill even put it in your house for you.
then call the cops. dont think it will hold down well.
im pretty sure when ever i do bank transfers (i do about 6 a month to varied accounts) it says i am responsible for making sure it goes to the right recipient as once its sent, its sent.

Never found out what it was, bank said they couldn't trace it and I waited a while then spent it :)

Well from my own experience, so I know it's true in MY case.
They knew they made the mistake when the person they didn't pay enough complained and I questioned why I got more pay. I didn't have to give a penny back as they didn't ask for it. Didn't go any further than that.

I'm not gonna argue. I used to do payroll for about 15 people and bank payments to all suppliers, so yeah, think I've made a fair few more than you. If you receive money in error and you are aware of it and decide to keep/spend it, then you can be done for theft. Simple. What if you accidently left £100 in my car and I kept it? Finders keepers doesn't really work when it comes to the law.

Well that's fair enough, if they haven't asked for it back and aren't pursuing it, that's by the by. In LAW if they asked for it back, you'd have had to give it back eventually. Either way, you are giving out wrong advice.

Some banks will accept the loss.
The OH's sister was in the town when she seen a large queue at the banks cashline & people where saying it's paying out double what you ask.
She & her man both took £300 out each & walked away with £1200 in total.
I said to my OH they would need to pay it back as the bank will know they got double. That was over a year ago & still the bank have said nothing.
Nicole what interests me more is that you say "The adviser said he can move it somewhere else for me if it's not mine",did he mean to his own account or a dark secret place WTF.
BTW:If £800 arrived in my account & the bank can't tell me anything about it,then the moneys getting spent & then if the bank asked for it back I would refuse & let them try & charge me.
I would also change banks for £800 as it's worth the hassle.
