Basically if i bought a very cheap shell that came with a v5 and i insured it would this count as proper insurance? Because i know that this new law means off the road cars need insurance. Tanks.

Not sure if I'm reading this right.. But yeah, its insured. But why? if its off the road.

If your car is Sorned, and kept off the road, then you dont need insurance.

You would have to insure it as normal if on the road or if you parked it in your garage see if your home insurance would cover it if so its insured anyway. But then again i had a bike for 6months sornd no mot and no insurance told dvla they said its fine if its on your property and not the public road

Im asking this because the shell is very cheap to insure and the company offers third party extension :) so would i be able to drive any other car that has insurance on it? even if this shell never moves?

Ahh I see, I suppose it would.. Can't see anything really wrong with that, Unless you're using the other cars as constant transport then its pretty much insurance fronting..

No just occasionally, so if a shells got a v5 it can be insured?

check the terms for driving other cars under the 3rd party most will only do that over a certian age or under certian circumstances

Sorry to jump in here, but if I was to declare SORN with a failed MOT, but has valid insurance (whilst not driving because of the failed MOT) would the DVLA notify the insurers therefore making my insurance void and cancelled?

Again sorry to thread jack!

okay so, buy a ten a penny 1.1 shell insure it but never move it.

using 3rd party extension drive a vts, that correct?

i could quite as easily say, can i buy two cars a red 1.1 and a red vts swap over the number plates and nobody is any the wiser.

seems to me like this is what your asking?

I was just looking into a cheap way to afford third party extension to drive "a Subaru that my dad is looking to buy"

no youve got it wrong. Swapping over the number plates is basically cloning a vehicle. VIN numbers wont match etc... its fraud

what the op is doing is perfectly legal
not alot of companies these days insure you to drive any other vehicle but some do (under some circumstances like age, car value etc.)

Lol I know it is, but the principal is there! In order to pop to the shops etc what I said would work.

Still think its a complete cop out by the op though.

iirc you could do this but usually you have to be fully comp on the vehicle to be able to drive other cars, and a minimum age.. usually 21.

this will also mean if you're looking to drive your dads (at a guess, 10k subaru) if you crash it, your insurance will only be third party. so im sure he'd be pretty pissed that he'd get nothing but a smashed up car in return... just to save you a few pennies.

Usually with the 3rd party extension the car that the insurance is on needs to be in road worthy condition which yours wont be due to no mot.

For you to be able to drive a car on the extension, the insured car MUST be taxed, MOT'd and on the road.

For 6 months I drove my GTi like this, with my fiesta broken in the drive, Unknowing. Lucky I didn't get caught.

Ok, thanks for the advice everyone, can anyone suggest a car less than £400 thats got an M.O.T? Apart from Minis im struggling, the car has to be old like 1980's and cant be fast, and nothing like a saxo thats classed as boy racer? Thanks.

If you're eligible for driving other cars extension are you not able to get reasonable insurance on anything?

If not, where you getting DOC from? I really could do with it, just would find it genuinely useful
