As were coming to the end of an era with the 7th gen of console gaming, rumors are spreading about projects of new consoles currently being developed but what are your expectations or dreams for the 8th gen of gaming? :detective:

Get button bashing.

Nothing swill be announced this year.
More to the point what could a next gen console do right now, that isn't ground breakingly different to what's already available.

Motion sensing - Done
3D - Done
Internet Services - Done
HD - Done

All that is left is to upgrade the graphics and processing power, but for what?
The current Gen of High end gaming PC's are the bar right now, so I don't think any consumer will fork out £400+ on a next gen console.
Sony and Microsoft will use the time to define the next innovations, untill then they cannot provide anything that doesn't already exist.

Rant over :panic:

Possibly wrong Rogue.

Alot of people in the industry expect Microsoft to announce a new console at E3 this year. Why? A years head start on Sony again. It worked last time.

What can Microsoft bring? They've already patented DVR software and hardware which would lead you to think of recording games. Theyve already said that they plan on a full TV service which would also allow for recording of TV etc...

On too of that an upgraded console would allow games such as Battlefield to be te same as the PC with more players, bigger maps and more content. Do you really think Kinect is doing all it can? The 360 isn't powerful enough to use its potential. A new console would release the potential.

If Microsoft do not at least announce a console, I'll eat my words.

No I agree, I think Microsoft will make an announcement to play leapfrog again. The 360 is starting to struggle, definately limiting the potencial for the Kinetic. Again PC mods are utilising it far better. But the point I'm trying to make is every generation brought something new with them. Recording gameplay and replays is already avaliable, Both Microsoft and Sony have a video store to buy or rent. The PS3 even has freeview + recorder add on.

PC power and graphics won't really do a next annoucment justice IMO

What about Cloud gaming? Or games that you download instead of buying in a case at a shop. If Microsoft were to release a new consoles with new big hitters it'd sell. Even if it had nothing special.

all they need to work on is graphics imo, and making it more "life like"
i dont care about the fancy extras, wave at the camera and turn it on, who gives a fuck.

i love wireless controllers :y: everything else i see as being pointless.

just get the game play looking gooooood!

Cross console online gaming would be good. Alas, I doubt we're likely to see that, not due to capabilities, simply down to companies not wanting to mix.

Better graphics, better AI, 3D.

Now before it gets there, we'll get the usual overpriced hardware and some turdish games that will cost £10 more because it's next gen. Wait a couple of years before the developers get their heads around the programming and optimization of next gen consoles. Let's hope we won't get mass RRODs and YLODs, as in £400+ door stops.

Cloud gaming is still far away in terms of being better than the current gen of consoles. Think about trying to send 30-60fps at 1080p down the copper of your phone line. It just isn't going to work, yes compression methods can be used to allow cloud gaming but its not going to be good quality.

In terms of the next gen of consoles. They are coming to the limitations of the consoles deffinitely for the 360 its still using a DVD format ffs. Thats why games like forza come with install discs.

I can see Microsoft releasing a new console earlier than sony and dominating the market again with an inferior product because lets be honest the PS3 is more capable with blu-ray, larger hdd (at the release not so much now), more processing/graphics power. Yet lacks online features of the 360. I own both consoles and games such as Uncharted show the true potential of the PS3.

Really? Last I read the Xbox360 out sold the PS3 EVERY month in the US last year. It's not inferior until a game is made to make it look inferior. So far that game is nowhere to be seen.

The japanese and South Koreans were enjoying 100 G internet connections 5 years ago. Then in videogames the only thing being transfered is real time game data, not HD video.

Correct, and that's exactly how the atari jaguar crashed. Next gen console with turd games such as centipede and space invaders 64 bit.

Cloud gaming wont be fully implement for awhile because of the huge variant is people's broadband connection. Broadband coverage in the UK still isn't a given, no idea on the US.
Judging by a press release Sony made reguarding next gen, 60fps and 1080p are a given minimum standard.
Next gen console graphics will only be as good as current PC high specs. So untill we see PC GPU's take the next jump, we won't see it in consoles.

Gears of War 3 runs pretty slow on the Xbox so it's time the hardware got updated, and the new Assasins Creed on the PS3 forever stutters. The PS3 is a lot slower because the shitty Blu-Ray loading times.

For me next gen gaming would be back to cartridges, static memory ftw!

It is an inferior product. So what if it sells well the reasons its still selling is 1. The 360 has so many faults with the older models that people are buying the latest one 2. Xbox live is far better service than the playstation network.

I've repaired, flashed and customised Xbox 360s and I've worked at a official repair company for Sony on PS3s. The build quality of the 360 is shit.

Its not at all about if a game can make it inferior its all about online gameplay. Don't see why your going so defensive as its true but who wouldn't expect it given the time difference and the amount GPU technology moves on in 2 years the PS3 was going to be more powerful. Yes few games show that but thats because the Cell processor is a nightmare to code on for developers.

Cloud gaming is where all the processing is done on a server, that means graphic processing as well iirc. So it will need alot of bandwidth more than what we have in the UK. Japan is rediculous for bandwidth but still the rest of the world will need to follow suit before we see it.

GolfJay
22nd January 2012, 15:37
How is it as inferior console? The only thing you could say is the Blu-Ray drive which 1. Is slow as shit and 2. Installing a game such as Bf3 or Forza 4 is no inconvienice.

Until a game comes out where people will say "Ok, the Xbox couldn't do that" is released then it isn't an inferior console. You say people are buying more Xboxs because they're shitly built, surely the fact that they're willing to re-buy something that possibly broke on them is a good thing?

A game is no longer the core thing to gamers anymore, the whole online element is. Whether it be the game itself, media features or whatever. Microsoft have got Sony trumped 100% when it comes down to that factor. Xbox Live Arcade is doing ridiculously well, as is their efforts at bringing in new partners such as YouTube, Sky and other television networks.

Back up your statement. How is it better? In comparisons theres nothing between them. Some look better on the Xbox and some look better on the Playstation. I don't claim the Playstation is a crap device, I just really cannot see how it is better.

By the way, I have a Playstation too, the exact Playstation that has experienced hard drive failure twice!

Owning both consoles together in the past the only difference I noticed between them was on Grand theft auto 4.. When flying the choppers you could see more scenery at a further distance on the ps3 compared to the 360 which is not a big deal really, other games like call of duty are just as equal.

I think people choose xbox 360 for online play because all their mates own one, is a generally good for online content, and it is the cheaper console from the ps3.

ps3 fanboy myself. Me and my mates share content using each others logins and the online is free to play.

How is the new dashboard poo? It's no worse than before yet it's better for Kinect.

As for the Xbox360 being cheaper, the Xbox sells a hell of alot more games per console compared to the Playstation 3. I can go as far as posting figures too if you like.

Figures:

Total unit sales in millions based on the combined US, Europe, and Japan Sales for the Playstation 3:

Uncharted 3............... 1.68 (5-weeks)
Kill Zone3:..................1.66
LBP2:........................1.64
Infamous2:................. 0.82
Yakuza4:....................0.75
Resistance 3:.............0.58
Socom4:....................0.52
ICO/Shadow:..............0.42
Dead Soul:.................0.42
MLB 11:.....................0.37
Disgaea:....................0.27
Bleach: .....................0.18
Motor Storm:..............0.18
Move Heros................0.07

Thats a total of of 9.56 million units of PS3 Exclusivity for this year! Go you guys!

Compared only to the 3 360 exclusives based on US, Europe, and Japan sales.

GoW 3:....................3.90
Halo:CE:A................1.07 (3 weeks)
Forza 4....................1.07 (8 weeks)

So thats a total of 6.04 million units! Which is less but astonishing considering that it is only 3 games compared to 13 mentioned for PS3

It's also worth noting how long the games have been out. Most of the PS3 games have been out longer than the 360 games.

^^^ to be fair you could compare the sales of forza 3 + 4 opposed to the sales of GT5 that took about forever to be released. Then who cares about sales figures. Citroens sell more than porsches, you know which one is the better car.

Meanwhile there is already a XBOX vs PS3 thread somewhere.

Always owned playstation before xbox obviously as they came out first but once xbox arrived I've never thought of owning a ps3. And i can't imagine going back to play one unless playstation do something completely different and innovative with they're new consoles?

Both Console have pro's and Con's against them. You'll always have an exclusive game that looks ground breaking, but these are optimised for the Consoles strengths. On the flip side occasionally multiplatform developers favour one console for their project, which gives one console the lead.

One very good example to gauge this is Metal Gear Solid 4, an Exclusive PS3 title in which its developer Hideo Kojima was VERY ambitious.
Now, Because of the scale of it, at regular intervals the game would install the next section of the story / game onto the Hard drive. This procces took roughly 3-4 minutes per "act" with a rough total of 5-6 acts I think.
Besides this huge pause, the game was received extremely well by critics. Why?
Firstly this was the first instance of this happening on a console game but ultimately besides these pauses the game was practically flawless.

Could this game exist on the 360, Not a chance. Purely by hardware limitations.
By the time of release, Bluray was already the winning format. Metal Gear would require a confirmed minimum of 4 DVD's to work on the 360 ... but this would still be pointless as not all Xbox's shipped with a Hard drive (The only major flaw for Microsoft's console imo).

But what if the Game was made for the Xbox? Yes it would be smaller but the benefits?

DVD's: Read faster than Blurays (which have variable read speeds), so if the game did need to install anything. It would be a huge jump from what the PS3 could achieve.
Graphics: The PS3 GPU, as great as it it, is limited by shared memory, The Xbox is not. So you could easily expect sharper textures and shadows. Not a huge jump but noticeable if your looking.
Online: Sony's first online venture was with the PS2 "net play" it was free, unreliable and extremely unsupported. The PSN has improved on this but they are still playing catch up. Xbox live is the definitive console gaming experiencing, secure, reliable with that premium feel. MGS4 on the PS3 required another Konami account to play, so two accounts for one game. No surprise the online audience depleted quickly. If on Xbox Live it would be unified with Xbox live, also it would have achievements something alot of gamers go for. On launch the PSN had no "trophies" system so neither did MGS4 ... It still doesn't.

So why have I bothered type this all up? To prove a point.
A system is only as good as its team and developers backing it. The PS3 is flawed entirely but its shared memory, While 360 is flawed by backing the wrong format and not having a Hard drive as standard. Fixing this features while upgrading the specs will make "next gen" consoles.
But it will still only equal what PC's are achieving NOW.
2-3 years minimum
4 -5 years to read this :D

Pick your console based on your mates and games, then wait out your next move for next gen.

Theyve already said that they plan on a full TV service which would also allow for recording of TV etc....
The con of that concept is that you'd need a TV licence. I don't have one, and I'm not paying for one so I can watch shit aired for TV on my console rather than pay for Sky.

I wish they'd fuck 3d off. If I want a headache il talk to my mrs. Until they invent something that's never been don't all they can to is improve the graphics IMO.This has been done to death though.
Unless they find a way to make graphics as good as our eyes actually see them, games like Forza, MW3 and GTA4/5 are the best graphics a console will produce - even when you consider that's on an LCD/Plasma with HDMI etc.

What can they possibly invent that's new? The only way million dollar companies have made money the past decade is to rebadge old crap with a new feature. Like the iPhones/car makers/ etc.

I will sound like an idiot typing this but about 2 years ago I emailed Sony thru their site with an idea for a console accessorie similar to the Kinect but heard nothing. Then Microsoft released that.
I'm going 1 step further and trying to make use of existing technology to build a proper gamers exprience which has been done before but not since the early nineties. I want Sony to consider the idea seriously so this time I'm emailing from my email and keeping copies, I'm patenting my device(s), idea and if im laughed at then iv lost £150 and a few weeks research. If it works then I created a product that millions will enjoy for years.

We are consumers, we can't sit around and expect platforms makers to decide what to sell us incase we like it, they'd be broke in a year, we need to tell them how we want to be entertained. It's why so many films are remade and the franchises stretched, there's no innovation at the top.

it's not a comparison, it's just another way of illustrating that your stats are flawed from the start, regardless of hardware. End of the day who cares, what matters is the amount of fun you get.

I kinda agree with some things you say, but the consoles are struggling to reproduce those graphics. The frame rates on some of the modern games isn't great.

The controller side of things isn't all about changing the experience though. Don't get me wrong, I think kinect is great, for about 30 mins, or after 5 pints.

Real gaming is about wiggling your joystick and bashing buttons. It's like scrapping the 3 pedals and steering wheel in the car and replacing it with a sensor that you wave left/right to turn and a mouthpiece to blow into to make it go faster/slower.
People would just think it was some gimmick.

Which is what all these new fandagled controllers are to me, just patching over the cracks.

Give me an upright cab any day of the week.
