306 hdi for cheap transport.

Mk4 Golf tdi if you want something all found good with nice quality.

E39 525d if you want a proper motor which will return good mpg.

E60 530d if you want a newer, well spec'd good steer.

306 Dturbo are probably the easiest to get good gains from for little money.

For a start you could get them running a safe 1.2 bar boost for free. Well not exactly free as you will need a boost gauge but to actual tune it costs fuk all. Im sure there's also other parts from other diesels that fit and give good gains.

They go very well with the boost turned up.

I've got a 206 HDI with a stage 1 remap and it's brilliant.
Mine has a 206 GTI 180 rear axle and handles really well a bit like a 106.

With the Stage 1 I'd say performance is similar to a VTR but with a lot more low down punch, I average 48-55mpg and the black smoke is pretty epic.

Clio 1.5 dci the the blue CI pretty decent to drive 110 bhp mappable to 150-160bhp with no problems with a £30 tax disk per year and dirt cheap insurance its worth a thought.

Im quite a fan of turbo diesels, the Seat Ibiza 1.9tdi is excellent and one of the faster TD out there. The newer 2.0TDI are mappable over 200hp!

306td's aren't bad, but if you're going to get a derv you want one that goes well!

I'll tell ya what. A 306 Dturbo is the way.

Most people on here would flame me for mentioning the fact that 140bhp is easily aceivable, i've built an approx 160bhp dturbo and there's one out there with 213bhp. I shit you not. I don't talk out my arse.

http://www.krisb.co.uk/category/latest-news/

Before the rebuilt engine and custom turbo it would of pushed a vtec up a hill.

1.2 bar is nothing, the blue one i built is on 20psi which by standards is quite low but it's built for reliability. The 213bhp one is running over 50psi...

On another note, if you wanted to keep it relatively standard then 125 to 130bhp and 45+mpg is easy. Fit a bosch pump and you can run it on Veg oil.

Oh and bare in mind these power figures are all under 5000 rpm, so you can imagine the torque. 300ftlb or even 350ftlb... mmm.
