another alternator issue,

Right noticed after doing some engine work I realised i'd snapped the ring connector to the alternator.

so i went to the local mortor factors and asked for a new ring connector for it and the adived me i should get a 38 amp (yellow one) so i asummed this was the right one.

got home and fitted the connector went to start my car thinking it was fixed and tryed turning it over and smoke came from the alternator then it set of FIRE!!! :panic:

so i took it off the car to see where the fault was and it seemed to of started on what i think is the regulators (one of three metal prongs under the black plastic cover).

so got a replacement from the scrap yard for 30 quid it was off a saxo but im not to sure weather it was a forte like mine or it was off a furio but the engine looked the same as mine (it was green with a yellow trimmed seat i know that much as i was in a hurry.)

replaced this and set the belt right, if even a little slack so i wouldnt strain the alt before i got it working yet still nothing

the battery is on charge has been for a good few hours

yet im still getting nothing and the alt power wire still getting quite hot

the alternator i took off MY car is 14w

and the alternator i sourced says only 12w

yet all the bolts mount correctly and the 2 plugs are the same

any advice would help me massively, i have already had a day off work carn't really afford and more lol

cheers wayne :wall

thanks for replying kid,

basically to update ive rang around a few auto electricians and have replaced the neg bat wire from the started motor to the alternator but the alt is still smoking. i trying to get a mate to tow me to the garage who will try and sort it tomorrow they can test all the connections with a multimeter to asses where the fault lies.

ive (not to my knowledge) disturbed an earth points so i dont think it is that

i was thinking i could of blown a part of the ign system when i put the wrong ring connector on the old alt that blew up as the wire smoked but ive changed the connector to a higher amp connector and wire so this should of sorted that problem out

i think im right in beliving the alt is connected to the ign system ,battery, and dash warning light

im trying to single out the fault be having real problems
