I had my alloys sprayed white less then a year ago - they are immaculate. I had my tyrers changed an new one put on. I got my own tyrers and took them to the garage and gave them £20 to just change the tyrers over.. the man changed it and put it back on my car an when i looked at it he said the machine had caught it and its got marks all the way around the outside of the wheel and on the front a really obvious mark where the paint has been chipped off about the size of a 10p coin with 2 5ps right next to it! I was so angry.. so another bloke did the other one and it was immaculate.
The main boss man come out and tried to tell me it was because the way the wheels were sprayed.. and wouldnt give me my money back.. even though it was only £20! my argument was how come the other wheel when that other man did it has not got a mark on it yet the one the 1st man did is such a mess!!!

Because a different man did it....
Did you spray them yourself or get them done by a company?

Couldnt have been done very well if they chipped that easily, did they use any laquer? get them powdercoated or just repaint them, its an afternoons job and charge the garage for the paint. Even thought they'll probably laugh in your face

professionally ?
so they were baked and have a decent clear coat applied too? not just rattle caned?
its unusual to "chip" if the wheel has a decent paint job on as 9/10 a chip is from the lever bar dropping off the head of the machine and onto teh wheel face - but its ever so lite tbh.
scratches are from teh head of the machien itself, not stepping back a few mm when its locked in place, this will leave a pencil line around the entire rim about 8mm in from teh edge.

The tyre machine shouldnt catch the wheel if they are removing or fitting your tyres correctly..
The only part of the machine that would come close is the bead breaker, however this is done only when having your tyres removed...
When they put your tyres on, they put it on the machine, tyre loose on top, and then have a hydraulic arm that comes down... They spin the wheel and force the tyre onto the rim... This arm should be a few mm's away from your wheel, and not touching..
If its the machine that has scratched your wheel, regardless of how good they were sprayed, they still have a 'duty of care'... which means they are liable for the damage.
The only problem you have, is you now have left the garage.. therefore you have 'accepted the goods' in legal terms....
What you needed to do, was kick off like f**k at the time, until you got what you wanted... Or leave the wheels there (rejecting the goods) and visit a trading standards...
Your only option now really is to fill a fire extinguisher with paint, and take a visit back to the garage at 3am... :y:

Unless they were done with a rattle can and not done professionally, then the tyre machine could have scraped it all off around the outside.
What size tyres were they?
Plenty of soap, a little extra leeway when locking the machine, and possibly use one of these too:

thats for shit tyre fitters or shit resprayed alloys..

honestly i couldnt tell you how they were sprayed but i gave them to a company who just do spraying and they gave them back to me a week later and they looked alright!
I dont understand why the 2nd wheel is mark free if the spraying is that bad! surley that would be all marked up too.
Something has hit it hard for it to be marked like it is! :(

Like I said in my first reply....a different person did it....
He obviously set the machine up abit better with more gap and is just better at fitting tyres.

i dont really know i think they are 16's if that makes sense.. doesnt to me!
my other half deals with all that sort of stuff i just own, drive and pay for it!
I couldnt leave my car there with no wheels on it becasue i couldnt get home, so im still going to go out there later and scream the place down, then at least ill feel better!
Or my last resort is to take £20 + worth of stuff from the shop... that would make me feel a lot better!! haha

clamping inside the wheel
clamping the outer of the wheel
both has a different result, the tyre being used, could have a bigger bead, tougher sidewall plenty of things.
shit paint job, with tough sidewall is enough to take the paint off the rim tbh.

One word.... Monkeys.
Try getting a set of 255/30/18 runflats onto BMW wheels without scratching them or tearing the tyre. I could understand if you had stupid size tyres which are bloody hard to get on but most garages machines nowadays retract a little once they lock the arm on the machine, to help stop chipping paint.
However, on the other hand... Resprayed wheels will never have as good paint as original paint/powder coating.

i fit bimmer runflats every day... the first hundred where bastards!
now i laugh when the guys fuss over a 45 profile on a normal tyre!

I've had that before over the years that is why I am always careful what garage I go to for tyre changes. Nothing to do with the finish of the wheel, even a proper home made job should not be marking all chipping paint off it is all down to the operator. Some places I have used have the rim protectors before they put it on the machine. One garage wanted £28+vat for each alloy having a giraffe.

crap finish - will flake when tyre is removed.
you cant argue that. unless its had a professional finish, (9/10 times the origional from factory) its going to flake when changing the tyre, as the tyre itself rubs the edge of the rim.

how many people get them professionally done...and they just sprayed a cheap paint and clear coat on and left to dry.
very suspicious of "professionals" these days.

I would usually look on google and at the website and prices, If you are paying £200+ for a set of refurb alloys, I doubt they will just flake after you have changed a tyre, all depends if OP used a decent company or not or a backstreet shop

pictures would show if it's a chip or a flake. OP can't make the difference between a rattle job and a genuine professional respary.

tbf i pay around £20 quid a wheel for a face refurb,(little more if i want the complete wheel done) but im in the automotive trade, my mates help me out in their business (body shops ect), i help them out when it comes to mots and repairs. for work they would useally charge 2-300 quid for.

if its going through the books, my place would charge around 8 quid a wheel, balanced, inflated with Nitrogen, old tyres disposed.
ill do a 1,2,3 or 4 for £10 on the side.
i have this one guy who comes in, who is making his own wheels for his porsche, so is bringing wheels in and out all the time, i charge him about a 5er a time could be 1 or 6 at any one time, but he is in 2-10 times a month.

no shit sherlock. Look at any decent place on the net, it's about £50 an alloy.
The http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/ wanted like £100+vat for my old 18's on my scooby. Was cheaper to just buy a new set minus tryes. But then I suppose you pay for what you get in this business, buy cheap and buy twice as the saying goes.

err.. £20 is normal for changing 2 tyres, above average even.. so that arguement has sweet fa to do with it.
As for those who say you could have them powdercoated etc for £X, a shit powdercoat job is much worse than a shit paint job, worth keeping in mind. (In the wheel refurb trade myself) Some of the poor powdercoated jobs that get brought in to me are truely shocking, slightest wee touch on a curb etc and huge flakes come off, diabolical. By the same token, a poor paint job does the same.
However, the two tyres were fitted by two different people, and i would presume they were both painted the same way due to the fact that they were done by the same company at the same time. its reasonable to say that the tyre man is to blame here, all other factors being the same.
Even removing tyres from the diabolical powder coated wheels that get brought into me (flakey, peeling, bubbling awful jobs) the finish barely budges when a tyre is correctly removed, despite the poor quality of the coating, because of the correct usage of the tyre machine, and the spacing of the head from the rim edge

i get a pair off tyres swapped on my wheels for a tenner by some shitty back street garage. Never had any problems except last time i noticed a 3inch scratch on the face of one wheel when i got home. Nothing i could/was going to do about it, im just never going to go there again...
dry your eyes mate and find another tyre shop next time. Their shit service has lost your custom.

I had my VTR wheels refurbed in gloss white for £260 including hire wheels. Powder coated and an excellent finish all round I've had them all off polished and waxed them. A1 wheels in Wolverhampton, apparently one of the best places in the country (ask mk5 golf owners) and the only place that can do diamond cut properly. There dipped not blasted which is better. When you go there it looks a right dive but there bang on!
That's the bloke who fitted the tyres fault, I'd of charged em for a refurb tbh. Noticed your a woman, makes a big difference if you ask me. My moms had problems and they refuse to fix them I go and they sort it straight out.
