View Full Version : Couple of tricks for lowering your premium
skids_vts

I been looking at some of the prices some of the youngters have been paying and its quite shocking!! Some may have already been said before but i wanted to list all the tips to help you out
When i was 18 i owned a 03 plate VTR, got a quote and it was £2500, with a few tweaks it went down to £1700 ;)
1) Limit your mileage to less than 5000
2) say you drive another car on a regular basis
3)say you park your car on a street
4)Put the car value above £1500, this means you can select £1000 excess to bring your premium down
5)Your job can effect it dramatically( usually forces or proffessional jobs give a big cut, im not advising you to lie about your job obviously, but with the current climate people change jobs all the time ;)
6)Say you only use the car for leisure

I agree and I disagree with some of these tips you've given here, I believe theres a difference between blatant lieing as what you've suggested on a couple of these lol and let's say, slightly bending the truth haha ;)
1) Limiting your mileage is probably the easiest one to get away with, and maybe the hardest to prove in the event of a claim, unless they check your mileage from previous MOT's and when you took out the policy.
2) Saying you drive a car on a regular basis...I think this one would be a bit risky, I think insurance providers can easily check to see if you're insured on another vehicle.. :/
3) A street eh? Didn't know that one, if this reigns true then nice find! I thought driveways were the best, dunno why locked garage is so expensive. I personally say my car is being kept at a place with a better post code. (My Dads) In truth its kept at my mums but theres no way to prove this, as I visit both places so often.
4) Only fault I can find with this is in the event of a claim, you're going to be paying shit loads if you crash! But if you crash and are a young driver, you're going to pay shit loads anyway lol. Bit of a double ended sword really.
5) I wouldn't out right lie about your job, just tweak the name so that it is relevant to your work ;)
6) I'd say this is the biggest no no, if your insurance company finds out you were travelling to uni, college, work then I do believe your policy is nullified. Might as well wack on 'social and commuting' for that little bit of peace of mind.
I'd say best thing to do, is say you drive low miles, in non-peak times. Wack on your mum and dad onto your policy as named drivers and if you know someone who's a driving instructor HALLELUJAH!! Tweak your job title to make you sound safer. For example I worked two jobs, Waiter, and Safety administrator, guess which were the lower risk?? But I could change it to safety worker also, or just admin.
Just my two pennies on your post, but I think it can be handy for young drivers. I'm 19 and my insurance is £1400 on a VTR. 1yr NCB

about keeping your car on your street, it worked out a good 600-700 quid cheaper for me by keeping my car on my street than in the garage, i rang them up and asked why and they said because some people would scrape the side of their car on the side or something daft like that and claim on the insurance, thats what i was told :)

Lol that's mental! Did they not consider cars kept on the street being wacked by other cars??? Or just yob's vandalising your car? Or even STOLEN?? Seeing as its not protected by a locked garage door or a gate at the end of a drive. Absolute nobs, I'd love to see where they get their statistics! But i'm going to try this come renewal time! Thanks :)

When I do quotes adding 3 named drivers with a million years no claims, it sometimes works out cheaper to have different combinations of just 2 named drivers than 3..
So don't assume the more named drivers you have the cheaper it is...
Regarding the mileage you say you do annually, it is actually pretty impossible for the insurance company to prove how many miles you're actually doing.. After all, if you have named drivers on your policy, how can they prove how many miles you're all doing individually in 1 car?
The way insurance is governed in this country is absolutely crazy, they're left to do what they want basically, so I say go for it if you can tweak your quote to bring it down without the possibility of them finding out and shafting you for it.
I paid £1500 to insure my 1.1 Saxo when I was 17 back in the day, I thought that was crazy but people now are paying double that in some cases now!

i park my car on the street anyway
i genuinely do about 4k a year
i am a named driver on a trade policy so i drive alot of other cars
i am the main / named driver. i have my mum on there for genuine reasons, not to get the price down. what if i was to have an accident and needed to go hospital? and my step dad as out in the car ? she would have to drive mine. im not wasting the time of an ambulance for a broken leg or something.
im paying £1200
im more than happy to pay more if the mother wasnt on it...but then id have the brother or the other half on it for the same reasons.
i pay alot, i could have lied and got it cheaper...but i didnt spend 12k on a car to not have valid insurance.

i do less than that tbh 4.5k in 10 months, and thats with two trips to london, which were both one offs as id train it 99% of the time.
and about 800 on the R6
the XJR gets about 100 or 2.

4)Put the car value above £1500, this means you can select £1000 excess to bring your premium down
For the amount it'll bring your premium down it's not really worth it if you have a crash now is it.
This has to be the dumbest thread I've seen in a while for so many reasons.

Ironically, I've always said i parked in a garage (well, I do over winter when i'm not home) but found it £200 cheaper to park on the street.
I do have access to another car, and so put that as using it on a reg basis, £40 off.
And i do only do around 2k miles a year.
I bike to work, so only for leisure any way.
All in all, quite a reduction, without severly telling porkies = not bad!

It's odd, I was talking to Adrian Flux getting a quote the other week. My cars are always garaged and when they asked they question I obviously told him that. I then asked about this stuff about not being garaged being cheaper. He basically said it's a load of bollocks. lol

Strange that.
I'm sure when i used to insure my saxo / 106 it was cheaper to garage it, but now it's cheaper to park on my driveway / street - with bell that is.
I still think insurance is a complete lottery lol. they seem to just offer a price on the spot with.

If someone charges me more for keeping my car locked in a garage I will go fucking mental. Makes building a garage fucking pointless

Your theory suggests that burgulars attempt garages on pot luck, one day they get a saxo, the next a ferrari.
Apparently, it's because theives can work on the car in the garage to disable alarms / immobilisers etc without being seen and then just drive away.

Nowadays with insurance costs your better off buying a banger thats taxed and tested. Drive around with no insurance, if you get pulled by the pigs, they will just impound the car or give you a producer and ask your name and add(giv em a false one obviously). Depends where you live.
My apartment in manchester came with underground parking where only residents have access, thought i'd get a quote just to see what it was like and it was still ridiculously high.
Parking on the street works if i insure at my parents house, maybe because it's a cul de saq, although still doesn't seem logical!

I'm only turning 17, I'll consider using the 'under 5000 miles' but there's not much else I can do.. Not too many 17 year old's hold a highly paid professional job. I suppose I could also say I park on the street at a better post code (Dad's). Other than that I'm blatantly lying and I personally wouldn't take that risk with insurance.
At the moment I'm not getting quoted under £2,000 for a 1.0 Saxo. And if I can't get it under £2k then driving can go fck, there's noway I'd pay £2k for a 1.0, bad enough having to drive one let alone insure one.
Viper
15th February 2012, 00:23
Instead of going for a cheap and slow car you should do some research and find the cars with the least risk associated with them. Saxos, corsas etc have always been an obvious first car so they both have a lot of claims against them. Look outside the box and you might find something s lot easier to insure.
GaryKiddd

Believe it or not most people have suggested that to me. But, I have looked for other cheapish cars, there's no such thing as an unpopular cheap first car. There is a reason they're unpopular lol.
I think I'll stick with the saxo for a few months, just to get me started off and used to driving a petrol, then I'll hopefully get a different motor, I've my heart set on a Black Corsa B 1.2, maybe I'm being optimistic. I could end up falling in love with my saxo and never wanting to sell it, who knows.

It's odd, I was talking to Adrian Flux getting a quote the other week. My cars are always garaged and when they asked they question I obviously told him that. I then asked about this stuff about not being garaged being cheaper. He basically said it's a load of bollocks. lol
It's not bollocks about the car being kept on the road, my mrs is working at admiral at the moment & told me this, I was surprised!
In hindsight though, I would never buy a saxo/106 etc as a first car.
cba reading all the thread but skidvts doesn't half talk some bollocks so take everything with a pinch of salt.

Very handy thread, I said mine was parked on a driveway even though it is parked on the street, we do have both a driveway and a garage, changing it to street dropped the price 20 quid, then going from street to residential parking area dropped it another 20 (conveniently I have a residential parking area opposite my house).
This one totally confused me, Security features, currently have 'Engine Immobiliser' as the only feature. Changed it to 'None' it decreased £17, wth?

I been looking at some of the prices some of the youngters have been paying and its quite shocking!! Some may have already been said before but i wanted to list all the tips to help you out
When i was 18 i owned a 03 plate VTR, got a quote and it was £2500, with a few tweaks it went down to £1700 ;)
1) Limit your mileage to less than 5000 - Stupid idea unless you actually do less than 5k a year, they ask this question for a reason.
2) say you drive another car on a regular basis - What if they ask you to prove that?
3)say you park your car on a street - Could get away with this if not true.
4)Put the car value above £1500, this means you can select £1000 excess to bring your premium down - Not even going to start with this, what a stupid idea....
5)Your job can effect it dramatically( usually forces or proffessional jobs give a big cut, im not advising you to lie about your job obviously, but with the current climate people change jobs all the time ;) - Again stupid idea, what if they ask you to prove your occupation?
6)Say you only use the car for leisure - What if you crash whilst at work? I won't risk my ncb for an extra few quid to add commuting or business miles to my policy.
How did I not see this thread....
A few of my own:
1) Say you have as many NCB as you can have at your age
2) Say you are 4 years older than you are
3) Say you have been driving for as many years as possible given your age
4) Any other lie you can think of.
These are a joke obviously...
