no dude she has a 1.4i petrol... the automatics have more powerful engines on the base model :)

too late... thats enough to tempt me into being a geek again.
Basically the engine size refers to amount of air that can be drawn into the engine - give or take frictional losses within the inlet (such as the filter). The amount of air drawn into the engine per second/minute/whatever varies depending on the rpm of the engine.
In a basic form... the more air you draw in over a certain amount of time the more fuel you can burn in that time and the more power you produce.
dervs are limited to 5000rpm (useful) because of the burning charactistics.
the petrols can can be rev'd much higher (thus draw in more air for a given amount of time).
so for a 1.5d @ 5000 rpm (limit)
will draw in roughly 3,750litres of air per minute
a 1.4 @7000 (im guessing is the limit)
will draw in roughly 4,900 litres of air per minute.
hence on a basic explanation why the 1.4 has more power.
