Hi guys, My car failed its m.o.t on saturday. The garage said it had a huge amount of play in the passenger side wheel and the drivers side wheel sounded rough when spun so they put it down as needing wheel bearings. Iv since bought two wheel bearings and asked a small garage to fit for me ( not the m.o.t garage) this garage has just phoned me and said i need a new gearbox as it is causing some of the play and the roughness when turning. They also said i need a new steering rack as theres play in mine which i can believe.
So could it be the gearbox causing these symptoms? And if it is which gearbox should i replace it with? Its currently got a standard VTR gearbox.

Cheers.

IF the steering rack had/has play in it the MOT would of picked it up and advised/failed it...
Sounds like a bad garage to me.

Just get the failure bits on the MOT done and then put it through.

The second garage could be telling the truth but I would have expected the MOT place to pickup on a steering rack fault.

Well got the car back had a quick drive on the way back and the car feels a bit smoother but there is still a wheel bearing like noise coming from the drivers side :( And a clunk from the passenger side which i thought was the strut top mount but thats been replaced. Will know for definite in a couple of hours as car is going back into the m.o.t garage now.
