as the title suggests. would this point to rear axle wear or could it be something else??

Yes mate check the play while the car is jacked up just to confirm though

depends how then tyres have worn.
on one side more than the other? Inside edges? outside edges? middle of tread? both outside edges?

just on the outside edges, the outter edges are shiney basically

have they been used on the front in the past, as usually when the beam is worn its the inner edges that wear quickest

both outside edges? as in inner and outer of the one tyre

Have you checked the tracking?

that would only cause the fronts as you cant "track" the rear due to the torsion bar

yes but if the rear tyres have been run on the front at any time, they may be worn as you describe due to track being out
