Can someone tell me what this is/does (picture)

Hi, as the title.
Its a sensor on the right of the engine bay. Just behind the earth point on the top of the gearbox.

What ever it is, is it possible it would stop the car from starting?

Reverse light switch, it turns the reverse lights on.
Could never really cause any other kind of issue I'm afraid

there will be another sensor just lower down and nearer the exhaust that could cause a non start, the crank sensor.

Yeah i changed that already. I'm having serious issues with it stalling and not wanting to start again.
