View Full Version : Crank Pulley Spaced by 10mm?

Anyone got any idea why a crank pulley would be spaced by 10-13mm to the chassis of a car at all? Its not standard, just wondering why the hell its spaced so far over?
Pic to show what I mean..

As you can see its causing the belt to slip off.
The whole alternator set up has been spaced similar to try and match up.

got a pic of the alternator? you cant easily space some of the bottom pulleys as they are directly on the crank,
unless the pulley isnt (doesnt look) like the right one,its possible to space the alternator and bits across to allow a decent belt run but looks like the wrong pulley been fitted at some point,
or the alternator isnt the correct one and this was done to keep the belt straight, but again doesnt look a successfull job :panic:

it is a 8v single v belt isnt it? cant be certain but looks like a multi v.. 16v?

Can't move the Alternator over anymore, the chassis legs been 'Adjusted' a tad to fit. Maybe one more washer could be fitted, at a push!
It is the wrong crank pulley, I've never seen one spaced out to this extent on a 16v. Mostly asking, is there any major reason as to why a Crank Pulley has been spaced out?

it looks like its just had the wrong one fitted and the rest has been unsuccesfully modded to fit.
there is reasons why it may have wanted to have been spaced but you wouldnt intentionally do it the way it is.

I found a thread on the Rallye Register back in 07 when the 16v conversion was done, the old owner had the same issue, but packed it out with washers.
Looks like the Crank Pulley's coming off, revert back to standard set up, and hope for the best. If there was a reason to why it had been spaced, I'm sure I will find out if it don't fit.

sorry im really bad at explaining... is that actually a spacer or is it a pulley off a 1.4 306 with powersteering?
ive moved all my pulleys over actually myself on the turbo engine im building purely to give a bit more space for the manifold and turbo ive chosen as the intake for my turbo was incredibly close to the terminals on the alt. (running coldside on alt side)

You've just brought something into question, this engine was owned previously by a bloke who built a Supercharged AX, you may have a valid point. Will do some digging on the Rallye Register.
is it on the right way round?
Not sure if you're serious mate? :panic:

ahh well that may exlain it, its possibly left over from when a blower was trialed?

more than likely thats had a charger fitted.
try and find a standard pulley for that engine and see if it looks similar.

turbo or supercharger.
could possibly be lack of space for the turbo, so they moved the alt over to get the downpipe in. defo turbocharger if it ran a 3 inch downpipe.
with the supercharger i think the charger bracket forces the lot over an inch or so, really cant remember on that now.
my downpipe is 2.5inch and its 2mm maybe less off touching the alternator.

And what Stevo said, thinking abotu it, is 100% possible, i saw somebody else had a thread recently where they had to mvoe the alternator and pulley over so the supercharger could fit there properly? you never know i guess..sicne the chasis has been adjusted to make it sit as it is now, somebody obviously needed it that far over for a reason, and people do anythign to get more power into small cars...

Well now its catching fire LOL..
It started as a noise I thought was just the belt about to pop off, got a text when I got home from a mate who drove past me, he could see quite a few sparks from under my strut brace, popped the bonnet when I got home to be greeted to the sight of 'Grinder' like sparks on idle, escalating to full on sparks at high revs. Can see it from the bottom of the car clearly!
Metal on metal contact is happening somewhere with the tension set up.

Wtf? Can you not just take it out, remove some of the washers etc that are in the way and space it back a few mm?

You sir, are a fucking genius.
After taking the alternator/crank set up off tonight, it turns out for the past 6 years since the 16v conversion took place, all the owners of the Rallye failed to notice this.
It pains me to say, you are correct.

You would have thought that, 5-6 years since owners of this Rallye have been posting on Rallye Register about it, and I finally find it, thank fuck!
