Hey all as in title got the 106gti today , and i had it on my drive running and it started to stutter like it was gonna cut out , then it cuts out if i leave it , any ideas ? Ive brought some new spark plugs to see if its a dodgey spark plug , but any other sugestions then let me no , im not to good with machanical , im more of a body repair , but ill have ago. Let me no cheers

Mine used to stall whilst driving and idling, and it was the icv, needed cleaning out. But you don't mention dodgy idle, so probably not that.

could be almost everything.. had the same problem with my saxo vts 16v.

in my case it was a faulty lamdba, that for some reason decided that my engine needed a large amount of fuel:-)
try plugging it out, there is a plug underneath the airfilter box (i don't know if it is the same place on the GTI, as it is on the saxo)
you can replace it you want, mine runs perfeckly fine without it, i assuse yours should do the same, since it is almost the same engine.

but then it can also be some other faulty sensors (MAP, coolant sensor, air temp. sensor, idle control valve, and i could go on)

Yh it runs dodgey on idle aswell, and its nerly cut out a few times when just rolling pulling off in gear 2 , just abit iffy rely , but ill try pulling that sensor out see what happens , but it smells like its running rely rich aswell , but i dont even wanna start messing with them tbf id probly do more damage than good , but the gf is out in it atm when its back and in the garage ill pop that sensor out n see what happens , cheers for the advie lads

Whats the icv mate ? And is that something i can do myself ? Ive booked it in for a mini service for tuesday , so im gonna explain and see if they can find what it is , just would of liked to get it done before tuesday if i can do it myself

Theres a chance lol the intake is prity big , its one of them air filters whats suposed to have a pipe running to the fog light , but theres no pipe , i cant thik of the name of the filter , if ya get what i mean , ill be taking some pictures of the whole car later anyway , just a little project but wanna get everything running sweet first and i think this is the only thing that is worrying me

idle control valve, controls the idle ( who would have thought)

not sure how to do it on 106gti though. To give it a quick clean, you basically need to spray a little carb cleaner into the air intake.

I'm sure someone on here will know where to locate it, or if you post a pic of the engine bay, i'll more than likely be able to point it out.

It now has another problem , whinning noise and leaking abit of water from the right hand side of the car out of a little t junction type of fitting i think what i can see anyway , would it be the water pump ? Hope its nothing major

the idle control valve is at the back of your throttle body, if you are looking at your car from the front:-) , google it, and you should find a picture.
if you want to clean it properly undo the 2 screws holding it and take it out, just did it on mine several weeks ago. took me some time to pull the screws out, since i didn't had the proper tools. the sensor was dirty as hell, was covered in several millimiters of dirt.
spray it with some brake cleaner stuff and clean the dirt with a paper towel, should be as good as new.

Just got it bk from the garage , and its still running dodgey on idle and still like it in gear 2 it just stutters and cuts out , they cleaned the idle valve , changed the spark plugs , and a mini service , any other sugestions ?

Any other sugestions would be good , like what to do next because 140 quid later and its cut out a hell of alot more. Just aint got a clue now what to do ,

Heres a picture of the engine bay funny little wre what looks like it has to be bolted somewere anything look abit out of place let me no , ive just put that silver ducting on the air filter because there wasent nothing on it and its rite next to the radiator , so thought that would of helped

When your going through the gears.. is it smooth? or always lumpy?

Or is it just lumpy on idle?

Do the rev's dip low when you put your clutch in? resulting in cutting out at lights?

My 16v used to dip low and cut out.. I got a new ICV and a new temp sensor (the blue one) and it fixed it..

However still does it when I boot it, but I need a lambda.. And when I reset the ICV is idles perfect / doesn't dip low on the down rev.. So 100% the ICV..

So if I was you, i'd unplug the blue temp sensor and see if the rev's still drop low.. (it's fine driving with it unplugged - the temp light will be on dash - but it's not overheating.)

If that fixes the idle - get a new temp sensor

If it didn't i'd try a brand new ICV..

If it's lumpy all the time then ignore all that lol..

That is only to stop radio interference from alternator.. but they make no real difference. Just need's to be earthed on a bolt..

Its mainly in gear 1 when pulling off and its happend a few times in gear 2 when im coming up to lights slowing down , it just dips then goes up then dips , if i put revs on it dont do much , then it just cuts out altogther , its abit scary at times because if i go to pull out on a round about or something and it stalls , i have to knock the ignition off and start it again , i spoke to another machanic today and he said the same thing mate to get a new icv because taking them out and cleaning them dont always work , they still stick or something , how much we talking on a new icv ?

About £20 for cheap ebay one, 40-50 i think for a genuine citroen one..

The £20 one fixed mine tho..

try unplugging the blue temp sensor too (on right hand side of block near thermostat) Might be that :)

Nice one anyway mate , ive just taken it for a run on the motorway , stickin to the speed limit ;) and it seems to have sorted it out , ill no tomorow morning now see what its like upon start up , but seems better than what it was , but for the sake of it im still gonna get a new icv just to be on the safe side , just little niggly bits to get it up to standard now and hopefully it will be a good runner for years to come and put a big smile on my face

does the eml light come on at all when it stutters?

Na aint noticed it come on , just cuts out , then i have to turn the key off and bk to start again
