Just started looking for a Saxo, my head is thinking VTR but should i be persuaded by the VTS instead?

Understand the basics, the VTR is going to be cheaper to run, better MPG insurance a touch cheaper. But the VTS is quicker.

Apart from the VTS being quicker, what advantages does it have?

Looking for some expert advice here!

Also if anyone knows of or has something for sale for less than a grand, give me a shout! Have been searching the usual places, and their is a fair few VTRs around. Much more limited for a VTS though.

Wouldnt say the VTS was quick at all. Its nippy not quick IMO But for the money its put smiles on my face. Not against a 1.8 derv anyway. : '(

It will be nippier then a R thats about it.

for what you get for your money, the vts is quick

id always get a vts over a vtr, but then tax and insurance is more, if that doesnt arse you go vts

From what i understand. A VTS coughs and splutters if you try and floor it from under 3.5K revs/ low in the rev range. Its more suitable for a high rev range.

I quiet like my 8v. Cheap and economical. Depends what you are using it for? I use mine as a daily drive, not a track car but a little bit more go would be nice for the odd now and then.

Wouldnt say mine coughs and splutters, lows revs arnt that great laggy ( if you get me) but once youre about 4k+ you can feel it pull nicely. :D

defo high rev range.

VTS sure doesn't cough / splutter under 3.5k lol! it is more fruity in the higher revs though.

all in all, after owning both; the VTS is a much better drivers car than the VTR. I couldn't see myself going back to either, the VTS is only fun on a B road blast, other than that a saxo offers no major benefit in terms of day to day driving over something else equally priced IMO.

if it's cheap(ish) FWD fun you're after however, the VTS is spot on, the engine really is great on the country roads, and the vts gearbox is much better than that in the VTR.

Cheers for the responses. I only use my car to drive to and from work, so the majority of the time its taken easy. But when the time comes for a blast i want something that will still be fun.

If driven sensibly on a day to day basis is there a big diference in MPG? I understand the VTS is going to be thirstier when driven harder, but i presume that difference will be less when taking it gently around town.

at low revs they both pull pretty similarly, but the VTS keeps on pulling longer than the VTR. excellent car for blasting about lanes, but it certainly isnt a comfortable daily#

i have never understood the popularity of the VTR. its not quick, its not comfortable and its not reliable, so it doesnt seem to make any sense to me. whilst the VTS isnt the quickest car ever, it certainly doesnt get embarrased easily

you can achieve half decent MPG if you're not giving it the beans. I didn't notice any dramatic change when I went from a VTR to the VTS.

thirstier yes, but not enough to deter you from owning one over the R.

Tax is pretty ridiculous though imo, it's a lot of dollar on a post 2001 car for what it is, for that reason I'd personally opt to save the extra for the inital cost and get an EP3 / 1*2 judging by their prices these days.

s'all personal preference though.

If you buy a VTR, you will just wish you had got a VTS instead.

They are nippy due to the fact they weigh next to nothing.

The MPG difference between the two is not much unless you floor the VTS everywhere.

If you are looking for a poorly made car put together by a lazy frenchman that will end up looking like an oxo cube if you crash it then a Saxo is the way to go ;)

I hate them with a passion but something compels you to stick with them after you have owned one, hence the reason I bought another one!!

not reliable? where do you get that from? take it you know one person with a shitter?

i never had a problem with mine ever, had it a few years, but then i took care of it, changed oil often and didnt rag shit out of it.

Mate, y0 they are the same car except one is 16v and ones 8v. How did you get to that?

Last Saxo was reliable and the VTS has been so far too.

Maybe dont buy shitters.

Just looked at the cost of tax for the VTS after 01, thats ridiculous!! So if i go for a VTS will have to be earlier.

I have owned a few French cars before, and never had any issues really. Currently have an A3 1.8T and i just find it boring!

i rarely have any catastrophic failures of anything, but i dont remember a weekend i didnt need to do something to it. stop a leak, fix a knock etc
