Cool, what's the advantage of these?

Increased fuel atomisation, more complete mixture homo-geniality, and lower charge temperatures all leading to increased performance and emissions (if the spray and penetration aim is correct). The downside being transient response is affected.

It is usual to run two sets of injectors, one close to the valve and on further up the inlet tract, the further one away being used at high load/speed condition only and the one near the valve being used at low speed/load conditions to ensure good response and low wall wetting at low air mass flow.

Socks sap power, saxo engine bays having decent inlet length and good filtration isnt that easy.

Many engines have run a long time perfectly fine with open trumpets.

Carl-h
30th March 2012, 22:44
How much power do the socks sap? Say it was 5hp I'd happily loose that to save my engine and just take em off for the track or something when you want the power? Has anyone read many stories of engine failures due to not running filters?

titchster
30th March 2012, 23:31
S'all good taking them off for track, but what if you stick it in the gravel? That's gonna do more harm than any tiny bits of grit that might work their way into the trumpets on the road (not saying that won't do any damage, but, ya get what I mean...)

As I said many engines have run with no filtration for years with no issues.

My engine fitting socks the thing didn't even want to idle anymore. They were soon sold on.

Carl-h
31st March 2012, 08:43
I had a little look into it last night and it seems the best kind of filter is one that fits across all the bodies. That way there's lots of surface area so doesn't loose as much power but they do look shit in comparison lol. I wouldn't dream of even starting my car without a filter but maybe I'm just paranoid lol.

I have a carbon air box here, which I'm trying to modify to reduce the Db for drive by on some tracks. However as said the saxo engine bay and my long inlet tract means its not a simple job.

If you are not running Dth it's alot easier to change the runner angle to aid things. Thankfully I picked up the air box which was meant to work ok with my set up.

the problem i have with socks is this

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx238/penis4000/DSC03700.jpg

3 of my 4 looked like that
they were zip tied on to stop them movint with a nice air gap as they need
the suction and fact they restrict air meant they got sucked down the trumpet ant the butterlfy ripped them open

i run unflitered as i cant fit anything else in with how mine aim
tempted to try and get a higher aimed manifold made to allow me to get an airbox on there

my turbo doesnt run a filter..just runs a direct cold air feed with some fine..strong steel mesh(to stop stones and stuff)..direct from the head light to the turbo :homme:

done 5k so far fine

call me daft but its my car..and having ran with filter and without..i think id choose without tbh....the difference is unbelieveable

EDIT- sure i read somewhere by sandy that had he'd never had an engine die from eating a stone or grit with no filtration..but had seen several suffer from ingesting socks or pieces of filter :p

dont quote me on that though as it may not have been him(pretty sure it was though)

Correct, ingesting bits of the filter or in the case of the socks, bore washing due to the massive air restriction single trumpet socks create, they can often spoil the fuelling by 20%. I'm not saying you shouldn't run filters... you should... but really it ought to be a proper bar type filter (ie ITG JC40 as we use on the GSXR kits when requested) or ideally a K&N panel like Dave has above, which really means an airbox and airboxes need to be designed very carefully or they rob the engine of the benefits of pulse tuning, if it's evident.
I'm planning an airbox design, but until i've tested it to the point where it loses no power over open induction, I won't be using it.

Lol. The shortest ones that sandy runs on his race engine (that dont loose power or torque compared to longer ones) will only just fit in without modifying the scuttle, however there's not really any space left for a filter hence why I've had my scuttle moved back slightly to make room :)
