Another brake problem!!!!

Took my furio down the street and a brake pad from the front left came off and now is pissing out brake fluid.

What's the cause and what do I need to do to fix it?? Help please!

When you say the pad came off, do you mean the pad popped out of the caliper or did the whole caliper come off, or what? Where is it leaking from?

Pictures would help here.

Have you/anyone else done work on the brakes recently? Calipers all bolted on correctly? All the spring clips on the pads? etc etc.

The outa pad popped out of the caliper and is now leaking brake fluid. Pins and bolts are there. Has vtr calipers on the front. Not been touched since I bought the car last September. I've been hearing a weird scraping noise the past 100 miles or so and thought it was something in the engine.

100 miles or so ? Shoulda got shit checked out before you had a serious accident !

Maybe the caliper hasn't been releasing properly for a while. I don't see why brake fluid is coming out unless it has broke a nipple. You'll need to jack the car up, take the wheel off and have a proper look. I wouldn't go driving it anywhere. So if you can't do this yourself, try and get someone to come to you.

Brakes have been perfect until now. There was no way of noticing anthing wrong with the brakes. And im not driving as there is NO brakes at all.

Been told that there was 1.1 discs on it and they should be vented and they arent. Which is why the pad came off.

Is it the case of just buying new discs or will the caliper need replacing?

^ This to be perfectly honest. If you're hearing odd noises from the brakes you should have had it checked!

Get it down to a garage on a low loader/tow on a solid bar and get it looked at properly!

If it has calipers ment for a vented disk braking onto a solid disk then the piston and caliper will be over-extending.

Given the above info I suspect the following sequence of events has happened:
1. car has vtr calipers installed on solid disks with fresh pads
2. pads eventually wear down through use to the point where the caliper movement means either the carrier or caliper is contacting the disk (scraping noise)
3. pads wear more and the pistons are now seriously over-extending.
4. one time the pad doesn't quite move back to where it should in the caliper but the carrier does move, causing the worn pad to drop through the gap between the carrier and the face of the disk.
5. the next application of the brakes allows the carrier + caliper to move excessively, causing the piston to rip the seals and come out of the caliper bore.

Get it trailered/towed to a garage and properly looked at. DON'T DRIVE IT! YOU WILL HAVE NO BRAKES!

more then likely if the piston has been grinding against the disc when the pad came out

Ok. The piston has not been grinding. The side of the brake disc that the piston is on still has the brake pad in. Just the one you can see on the outside is off..

Pah hahaha! righto. The first person to reply to your post to try and sort out your issue was.............. oh yeah, me.

All I have tried to do is work out what has happened to your car. If you couldn't work out from all the posts that your caliper may well need replacing due to you being a pillock and not looking after your car properly then you shouldn't be driving it. Most people, on being told that their car may have incorrect parts fitted, would have had it checked over by a garage or someone knowledgeable. Most people also would have also had them checked after hearing grinding/scraping noises and not driven it for 100 odd miles.

Basically, your a twat for driving it when you knew there was potentially something up with the brakes. Imagine what would have happened if the pad had fallen out when you'd been driving down the road and you suddenly found that you had no brakes when you really needed them! Insurance would probably be invalid as well in that instance.

Oh, and idiots like you perpertrate the stereotype of brainless muppet racing about in unroadworthy heaps.

I had no idea it was my brakes at all. My brakes didnt feel any different to what they were 6 month ago when i first got the car.

It's very difficult to give definite answers over a forum. We can only guide you on what it may or may not be.

Easy to change. I thought it was going to be a nightmare at first but its finee.

Jack it up.. i put the rear on axel stands, handbrake off, Carefully undo the brake line nut on the caliper otherwise its a new pipe jobby iirc. undo the 2 nuts behind the caliper. Pull off.. Be sure to take the part that holds the pads off though to put on your new caliper if you dont get that already with them. 2 bolts. Reverse fitting. Then bleed.

Didnt need a new calIper. The piston just went back in and stopped leaking which is fine by me. Mechanic has checked it over and brakes are spot on. I just took the 2 19mm bolts out and pushed the piston back as far as it would go. The guy that had the car before me put vtr calipers on without getting vented discs fitted meaning the piston came out too far. Stupid fooker. All sorted now thanks to these guys.

That's good news then :). So the inside face of the caliper/carrier hadn't contacted the disk then? Did you check the seals on the piston before reinstalling? Overall it sounds like you've been very lucky. I hope you've got vtr disks on it now then :)

Yeh the seal was fine although the piston was out quite far. And now vtr vented discs are on :)
