Hi people, My gf is not long off taking her driving test and she just told me that her instructor charges the hourly rate while on the test. Also they charge you for an hour pre test. This never happened to me and tbh i think its ridiculous. Other people have now said that they charged them for it 2. Did this happen to anyone else on there test. It must be really annoying you pay for your pre hour and then your test so 80 quid or whatever it is and another 20 for a driver instuctor to sit and wait. I know about petrol cost but thats not alot. Plus you dont take an hour. Glad it didnt happen to me but I think its taking the piss really. Whats your thoughts on this?

yer i gues but its annoying havnt they got enough money out of you. Mine must of let me off the 20 then. I just think they charge you for pre hour which is fine and then you have to pay for test and a bit annoying to be charged again for 30 min or less.

yes mine charged me to, your basically using their car for an hour so you pay them for the hour. if you wasnt on test they would be doing another lesson so they need to get their money back. Basically you are hiring the car for every hour you drive it. Dont like it then get your gf to put her own car on the road, tax mot and insure it and use that for her test.

I had to pay but mine was a robbing bastard who told me I need 20+ lessons. I passed first time with 2 minors after 6 lessons... My gf's instructor doesn't charge any extra for the test but he's really genuine and loaded. He gets people passes as soon as their ready rather than dragging it out and because of it he gets more business than anyone else in the area.

My dad's a driving instructor, like other people have said the hour or so they are waiting for you when your in the test he could be out teaching another pupil...
Driving instructors are on shit money tbf, people seem to think they are on £20+ an hour, but out of that they have to pay for the car, wear and tear on the car, fuel and still make money to live...

I paid for an hour lesson before and then I paid for an hour while I used the car on my test. I see it as only fair, if I wasn't using the car he could be charging someone else a lesson so why shouldn't I pay?

27th March 2012, 19:49
I think their money is pretty shit tbh. Yeah £20 an hour but you can probably get through £5 fuel in that time plus the car wear and tear (probably high with leathers) and I'd imagine the insurance is pretty mega. So after everything else say they got £10 per hour, better than my current wage but hardly amazing if you consider a mechanic working for him self will charge 30-40.

suppose it can depend how long your out for. I was barely 20 mins and he took me back and said I'd passed. Might be why he didnt charge me

Yep paid for two lessons worth, one hour before the test, and the test, as said if he wasn't at the test centre waiting for me to finish driving his car around, he would have been giving another lesson. Seemed fair enough to me tbh.

I got charged for an hour pre test to go over some stuff, an hour for the test, and then the 30 min drive home, as did everyone else I know. At the end of the day you're using their car and their time same as any other lesson.

30 minutes to drive back from the test centre? jesus.
my instructor always left a gap after any tests so he was covered incase anything overran or suchlike. Top bloke really.
Heres the question, did anyone else get driven back by the instructor or did they have to drive back themselves in the instructors car? I remember him driving me back which was an odd experience as it had been about 5 months before that i started learning!

I had to pay for using the car for the test and for an hour before too..
Even though I only had about 15 mins before my test to drive because he had to take the car to the garage in my hour of practicing and he still charged me!
But luckily I passed first time :)

now this is wrong. you shouldn't be charged while you are not actually using his car. I'd have kicked up a stink as the vast majority of people would have sided with you.
It'd be like him charging you for a lesson and then having you sit and watch him clean it :homme:

I'm surprised he didn't do that tbh haha he was one of them time waster ones, but aren't most of them? :homme:
He got me passed fairly quick though, so I didn't mind paying that extra £20 because at least he didn't drag my lessons on like some instructors do

If you pass they have to drive you back, it is to do with insurance. If you fail you are still on a provisional and still insured so you drive yourself back. :A:

Yeah 30 mins after to drive back, there never used to be a test centre in my town
And yes instructor drove me back, something about him not wanting over confident people crashing straight after they've passed the test

Mine was a legend, taught most of the family! Pervy and old but hilarious and knew how to teach. Always had his eye on what you were doing even if he seemed off somewhere else towards the end nearer my test!

Yeah my instructor wouldn't let me drive back either. But as soon as I got home and my mum had changed my license type on her insurance I was gone lol.

My dad took me so no.
For anyone who has learnt to drive with their dad, they will know that saving money is not always for the better. I wanted to strangle my dad on the way to the test centre, he made me ridiculously nervous!

I booked a 2 week course, 30 hours and test included for about £500 4 years ago when i turned 17. Even doing this he charged me for the use of his car on the test... just need to look around for the right deal i suppose some will offer better than others

I got drive back, I just put it down to an insurance thing, since you are no longer covered by his insurance since you now have a full license.
That and you would be giddy as fuck and possibly full of adrenaline so I doubt he would want you driving his car like that.
