Some of you may remember me, as I've had two saxo's previous to my Clio 197. My first was a White 1.0, and my second was my very well cared for Icelandic Grey VTR, and now my daily driver a Black Renault Clio Sport 197.
Having wanting to have a little project car and to start doing some track days I thought that a little VTS was perfect for what we wanted. So me and my mate went on the hunt for a 'fixer upper' me and my mate are going halves on the project. Even Cheaper!!
Just over a week ago, we spotted a mk1 VTS on eBay with a few things that needed doing, made him an offer and he accepted. So if all was well, we was going to have it. Made the 4 hour journey down to view the car, and all what was said in the advert and via messages was true, so we had it.

O yes don't worry about them they are going. Either a set of R wheels or a set of rallye steels will be going on it.

Good to know!
Will be better when we get it all cleaned up!
And the price of the car has come down a bit now as we found another 56p so car = £368.34 hahaha

Been doing some more stripping this morning, got the front seats, carpet and sound deadening out. Also fitted new wipers and freshly painted wiper arms (not the best of jobs but looks better than it did)

What does everyone do with the wires? We would like to tidy the wires up a bit.
Any advice would be appreciated on turning it into a little road legal track car.

This afternoon we decided to take the cam cover's off, and prep them for some paint, as they weren't in the best of condition.
Looked like they have been painted before, and a heat resistant paint was not used as it was all flaking off. Don't think it was sealed properly aswelll as it was leaking a bit. So that's all cleaned up now, and will be getting some proper paint and sealant tomorrow. Heard the locktite stuff is good for it?

Dunno about R wheels on this. Rallye steel would be good, but I think VTS wheels would be a better choice however more expensive for track tyres as you know :(
Nice rare colour though, cant be many around in S spec

It's just finding a set of rallye steels, that's all. We'd rather go second hand on some parts due to the cost of things, trying to keep the cost down.
We are writing everything we buy down, even little parts like bumper clips. Good to see what your overall cost of the car is when we finish the the car and it's ready for track days.

Why cHange the wheels other than they look a bit rubbish? Vts wheel are heavy rallye steels poor with brake cooling.
These have a nice open design which should aid brake cooling and will be lighter than s wheels and you already have them.
My 2p.

We idealy wanted 14s due to mk1's coming standard with them. I can see what you mean about brake cooling, as I have heard that aswell about the rallye steels. Didn't want S or R wheels as I thought they would be quite heavy.
Something to think off.
Thanks for you advice! Appreciated

That would be a great help dude, I was going to compare one with the spare wheel which is a VTR wheel.
Just been and weighed one of them came up at 15.5KG with tyres, it was a Nexen 195/45/15, though i'm sure the tyre doesn't differ much in weight with each company

Surprising. I think I seen on here that the standard VTR wheel with a tyre was around 15kg isn't it?
Cheers for that dude
Not sure about with tyre but in a thread I found it said:
Vtr alloy wheel without tyre = 7.648kg
So not sure what it would be with tyres, but i'd go at around 12KG or so

Few more updates to be done tomorrow. Me and my mate both off work so hopefully weather will be ok to get the suspension arm changed.

Well partially back haha
Jacked car up this morning to have a look at the suspension arm. Cleared most of the mud off, will upload some pics later of how muddy it was under there.
Unfortunately it then started raining so chucked wheel back on and gave up.
Updates will be next week now. Unless we buy anything through the week.

New plans:
The old plan was to get the car how we wanted it, ie; a sorted track car. But having a think the other day, that could take a while, long into next year. So to get started we thought we would just get essentials done and then go a do one and get a feel for track days. Whilst still making changes to the car.
So we plan on doing one about May time, a local track to us. And before that we are going to give the car a good service including;
K&N panel Filter
Oil Filter
Oil Change
Spark Plugs
Fuel Filter
Check all brakes and change if needed. Might just change them anyway for piece of mind.
Bolt Front seats back in the car.
Then go have some fun

Also changed the spark plugs today. Think they needed changing on the look of them.

Still need to change;
Oil filter and oil change

Put K&N panel filter in to complete the mini service.
Then to change all discs and pads. And I think we will get on to doing our first track day.

We recently changed the headlights as the bottom clips where broke on both of them.

This week we should be picking up some parts for it, including a front bumper, standard fuel cap and a SaxSport exhaust, the 3" road version. Heard good reviews on the saxport and our standard system is blowing from the back of the back box so time for an upgrade!
Also have a TRS tow strap going on the front, will be fitting that when new bumper goes on, so we can modify where the strap comes out of the bumper so it comes out straight!
Planned on doing our first track day on the 19th May, but the date was changed to previous week and can't do that one because of work. Hopefully the next few months will be it's debut.

It's the 3" road version. The back box is about a year old and the centre pipe is brand new. All welds on the back box seem fine to me, and looks in great condition. Only thing we need is new exhaust hangers, so powerflex one's will be bought or we seen some on Kam Racing's website
Hopefully fitting will be on tuesday.

If weather is dry tomorrow the exhaust will be going on. Got some Powerflex Exhaust rubbers to use with the SaxSport as the hangers didn't come with it when we bought it. Standard exhaust rubbers are totally shot!
Might aswell upgrade as we go along!

Had a spare 5 mins to spend on the car today, not having much time to work on the car as few things that need doing on the 197, and that being my daily, it has to come first!
We went to a scrappy a while back to pick up a few things, and ended up buying a washer bottle cap, and some 106 door bins. For the grand total of £10!!
They've just been sitting in the car, so fitted them this morning! Just need something for the top part now!
http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv268/Baker_27_2009/19281f4d.jpg

Just need the lower one now. I had the OMP upper and lower ones fitted to my previous VTR, and felt they did a world of good so had to have them on here to.
It didn't fit properly as I think the MK1 models need the straight one, but after taking the bonnet stay out, it fit's fine, bit of a pain to put the stay back in all the time but there we go.
Paint is flaking in a few places, but not to bothered about that at the moment!!

On the VTR wheels at the mo are 2 hankooks and 2 makes I can't remember.
Will be looking at lighter wheels and better tyres to use for track days.
Just need to find a set of locking bolts for the VTR's and they will be going on.

Those are next on the cards. If we was in a position to buy them we would.

Painted the Manifold Heat Shield this afternoon, had some left over paint from doing the rocker covers so might as well used it.

Also cleaned the ICV, was quite a bit of muck in it, but all clean now.

Thought this would cure my dodgy idle, felt it was a bit better, but on more inspection of watching the rev counter, it's idling bang on 900 revs wen warm. And still would show 900 when it seems to go a bit dodgy.
Any ideas??

Fitted the other two R wheels today to the front.

Idle might be the temperature sensor (the green one), I replaced everything and this last and it cured the problem, only £12 from fast parts

That the one under the ICV?
The revs don't change tho when it happens, it stays bang on 900.
Will have to buy one and see what it does. Fast parts In Cwmbran yeah?

Yeah, the droplinks on the car at the moment look so old! Wouldn't surprise me if any of these parts have been changed in it's life!!!
Tells me that the old stuff is going to be a right pig to get off!!!!

Had a little 5 mins on the car earlier before I went out, and painted the badges and the rear tow hook. They was 'tcutted' before but had service scratches on them, and looked grey instead of black. Are now painted in gloss black.

The tow hook was a bit rusty, nothing some Sanding and KuRust didn't sort!
Hopefully got my GF's dad (mechanic) coming to have a look at the car this week as its not running right and leaking a bit of oil. Thought it was best to get a professionals opinion on it, then we can crack on sorting the right stuff to get it running right!

Still waiting on my GF's dad to come have a look at it! Seemed to run a bit better today though.

Do you believe in that Hammerite direct to rust stuff? I used Krust first and went from there. Never start a sentence with 'But'.

Coming along nicely now! Glad you didn't use that waxoyl underseal stuff. Its so messy and gets everywhere! It stays all oily too so you wouldn't be able to properly clean underneath say if you went off on grass.

I have some KuRust, only a small bottle though. 'BUT' it was only service rust so thought it would be fine to get the worst of it off then paint over.

Yeah they is lots of products for it now. Thought this would be fine. Dried quite well, and have lots left to do other parts of car with to.

Unfortunately we have decided to now break this. Having the car for a while now and more and more stuff is starting to creep up. Plan was not to spend a lot of money on it :n:
Will take offers on the whole car if someone wants, just PM me.
Will advertise a breaking thread soon.
