View Full Version : I'm hours away from buying...

Hi all,
First of all, I'm going to throw this out there... I'm 28 years old.
I have owned a huge amount of cars over the past 10 years, including more recently:
BMW 328Ci E46
Honda Prelude 2.2 VTi Motegi
Honda Civic 1.6 VTi Coupe
Now, I am just about sick of paying £1000+ for insurance on the BMW (which is my current car), and I'm even more sick of the 19mpg I'm getting when NOT booting it.
I've been offered a totally unmodified VTS for next to nothing, and I am going to view it in a few hours.
My mate just called me a 'moron' and a 'chav' for considering a Saxo at the age of 28, but my very very first car was a Saxo 1.1 back in 2000. I remember it being reasonably fun to drive, nice to look at, and very lightweight. In other words, I have always had a bit of a softspot for them, and have always wondered what the VTS might be like to drive.
Anyway, there's about a 90% probability I'll be the owner of one later today, but before I go, I am interested in your opinion.
At 28 years old, 6' 2" and working as an IT professional (Lead Programmer), is turning up in a Saxo going to be as embarrassing as my mate thinks it is?
I'm thinking I should just totally disregard everyone else's opinion and just go for it. My money, my life, my car... right?
Do what you want mate, your the one who has to drive it, aslong as you feel happy in it, sod em!

dont understand why what car youd drive would matter to anyone else..
You might get the odd guy at work lol but what does it matter..? A saxo isnt very pretensious though so if you dream of starring on "towie" i wouldnt buy it.
Itll give good mpg, good smiles per miles and be cheap as chips to run/maintain.

As you said, your money, your life, your car, fook what they think imo.

Lead programmer should be on enough to run that bmw to be fair, but with life expectations and everything going up in price i could see yourself saving alot of money for the future.
Do it, there is nothing wrong with a vts. Why be bothered by an 'image' too many people get caught up in possessions/image these days.

I can strictly afford to run the BMW, in the same way I could afford to run an Evo. The thing is, I just can't seem to justify the £1200 insurance at my age; it feels like money down the shitter.
I got a quote on the VTS today at £468 fully comp. That's a huge saving already, not to mention the fuel economy when I'm stuck in traffic, which is most days!

Didn't mean for this to sound arrogant btw...
What I meant was, I'm sure I could also technically afford to run an Evo, but it would mean no savings, no nights out, shit meals and absolutely no other free cash whatsoever.

Basically build quality is a big difference.... In a saxo you feel as though your in a go kart and it rattles and is noisy where as the bmw is the opposite so its up to you really

You feel more connected to the road in a saxo i have noticed even compared to other old cars, reminds me abit like the old metros

I'm with you on this. I see any expenditure on a car as money down the bog. So I've never bothered to move from 106s or saxos - at least until I find a car that is as much to drive and costs pennies to run. All this finance bollocks and 'image' associated with newer cars is not my cup of tea - especially if you can't have the lifestyle to match or exceed the car. It gets me from A to B and it gets me there with a smile on my face.
I'm 27 if that helps. You do get the odd look from repmobiles when you're in your suit, but generally I don't think many people batter and eyelid, if they do I haven't noticed and don't care anyway.
Fuel economy is pretty good, you'll rarely see less than 30 mpg unless you really do sit in the jams, but I guess anything is going to be better than 19 mpg.
The only downside is tax @ £260 a year, I think I paid.
EDIT: good luck with the purchase.

Very helpful, cheers ;)
I think it's £270 a year now the tax, as they're in the K band. My BMW is pre whenever it was in 2001, so I am paying £220 a year in that anyway. £50 a year is neither here nor there when you consider the rest of the savings.

If said picture is of a "average consumption" on the obc, I'm going to LOL so hard I'll probably loose breath and die..
A 46 m3 will return low 20s around town and mid to high 20's on the motorway both with normal driving in the real world.

Well in my opinion, i'd say yes.
And no offence to people, but if i'm still driving a saxo when im 28... :panic:

Well I'm of a very similar opinion, I'm 33 and just bought a VTR as it's cheaper to run than most of the 20 or so cars I have owned before.
And so far I've actually enjoyed it, as it's good fun!

I,m 33 and joined the vts club a few weeks ago and don't regret it at all I will never grow up ! My worries were the bad rep that the car has carried over the years but at some point that will change. Enjoy !

Anybody who is looking for a car with a hint of fun, but dismisses a Saxo because of it's 'chav' image is a bit of a fool, IMO. There's a reason they've been raved about by reviewers for years...
Anyway, sod that, pics of the Civic please. :) EG, or EK?
