speakers will give you a much better sound over standard, but with ice the install is only as good as the part before it, so top head unit crap speakers =not so good sound and so on

headunit before speakers
headunit provides the power
speakers run the power but depending on how good the standards are you may not notice as much of a difference but changing speakers will mean the sound quality will only be as good as the standard unit (i assume is what you have) can do

what head unit do you have now? i think the speakers will be the better option but how much do you have to spend might be able to get both in your budget

but the standard head unit normaly over powers the standard speakers, turn it up and they can't handle it, upgrade speakers and they can handle it.

but as I said it all works in a chain the system is only as good as the part before it

what i said earlier... standard head unit was made on tight budget, therefore was designed and made on lower quality electronics and circuits blocks. headunits contains a lot of electronics therefore a lot scope for the sound to be read and reproduced badly.
An aftermarket one will have a lot more development time, better electronics and thus produce better sound.

and speaker has very little that can be done to improve the quality. the cone, the coils and the magnet can be changed but only to a finite amount, therefore less scope for improvment in the quality.

The 'wattage' of the speaker doesnt matter as that doesnt rate the 'quality'.

Good choice of head unit will yeild better 'instant' results.

point taken

but when I upgraded my speakers the sound was alot better, not as good when I upgrded head unit, then again amped them

... so you think changing the headphones would yeild better difference in sound than a better mp3 player?
